Noise issue - grinding/squirting/rattle

Hi,

I picked my ep3 up on Monday, all seems well except when I'm off the power doing reasonably high revs in a lower gear I get a wierd noise which goes when I press in the clutch. It happens when I'm on the throttle lightly also. It's not an agressive loud noise and there is no noise when idling. I'm probably being paranoid, I'm not used to noise in cabin at all because all past cars have been very well sound deafened.

I've read about bearing issues here on the forum and have become concerned but should I just stop worrying until the noise gets more violent?

Its hard to explain the noise, not really a rattle, more like a grinding or squirting or heating up milk with a coffee steamer kinda noise if that makes sense haha!

Many thanks

Mrs comes up to me before - "Sam why have you been googling grinding and squirting, who's ep3?" hahaha

Good job you remembered to delete the 'other' browser history...

It is probably the clutch and/or release bearing on it's way out. What mileage is the car at?

That's low for the usual problems, but then a hard life and over-enthusiastic downshifts could cause them at that mileage.

Definitely worth getting checked, the timing chain is a common failure point and could lead to major problems if left to worsen. Having said that, I'm sure a more experienced member will be along shortly to give better advice.......Cue Loxy, stage right.....

I'm not short of money, but I don't want to pay a mechanic over the odds for him to tell me it's fine if that makes sense!

Thanks for your help, Jim.

Cue Loxy?

I'm the polar opposite right now; short of funds and very limited knowledge . I was very relieved recently to hear that my chain was within reasonable stretch limits, great weight off my mind. Your problem is probably the clutch/bearing, which is a fairly involved job.

Loxy is THE MAN, his knowledge is leaps and bound beyond mine and he is extremely helpful.

Good news about your chain!

I've heard clutch and bearing issues can get quite expensive when they go, but also that the noise has come back after the works been done.

The noise i'm experiencing is a wierd one though and doesn't mirror other peoples descriptions of noises related to those bearings if that makes sense, could attempt to record it at some point.

Yes, record it if you can, that will be a big help. I also have a weird noise right now; it's a hissing noise that happens in every gear at 3000-3200 rpm. I've checked everything I can think of, it's driving me up the fricking wall!

****ing cars.

Hissing!!! That's the word i've been looking for! A 'hissy grind' ?

Indeed, 'hissy grind' is what I've been pursuing since I turned 14.

****ing cars indeed

I tried ****ing women, but the whining noise they make is worse....

Depending on where you are, there are plenty of specialists that will diagnose the problem with minimum expense. Funny story; I went to the local Honda dealership yesterday and asked the to plug in their fault code reader and tell me why the engine light was on, all I wanted was the fault code. The service manager said it would take two hours and cost £84. LOL. **** off Honda.

By all accounts, Grinspeed are the boys for drivetrain issues.

Indeed, Grinspeed. Might be a bit of a trek for some but he won't tell you a tale about this or that, he'll just tell you what is wrong and what it will take to sort it out.

In all honesty it's probably an issue that needs to be seen rather than guessing, but from what you've described it very much does sound like a bearing. Whether it is the clutch release bearing or a gear box shaft bearing I couldn't say.

Thanks for the feedback lads I appreciate it!

I was with family last Monday in Bolton, it's also where I bought the car from and only a half hour from Leyland! Shame I'm back in Cornwall now.

There's a garage near by called SS motors, I'm confident the owner Shane is a massive vtec fan, he's got the most insane s2000 I've ever seen so I imagine him and his lads know their way round a vtec engine.

I'll have it looked at.

Thanks again chaps :)

UPDATE

I've just filled up my tank with fuel and the noise has all but dissapeared, it's still there when shifting gear but much much quieter.

I know it sounds ridiculous but has this ever been mentioned before!??

Thanks again to anyone that helps :)
