Obtaining the right insurance fora high performance spec. Advise needed

Hi guys

I have been reading a lot on this forum concerning insurance and I was looking at Greenlight and Sky insurance. What I wanted to know is if you have a standard hothatch or any vehicle for that matter, these similar companies state that you have to be driving a similar vehicle in that performace mark minimum 1 year. How does this work? For example you have a standard Ep3 and supercharge/turbo it 450 bhp. Where are you suppose to obtain that experience

Your feedback and thoughts regarding this will be most appreciated.

If you drive an EP3 for a year, re-insure it and then modify it, there won't be as issue. They'll take it on performance mark of the car as standard, for example, if you drive a turbo EP3 for a year, that doesn't automatically mean you could then insure a standard R34 GTR, as in your opinion you have driven a car in a similar performance bracket.

There is too much to go into policy/procedure wise for insurance companies to act like you think they do. So don't worry about it, if you have driven an EP3 for a year and Sky insure you, they won't stop you modifying it.

Is that an EP3 in your avatar? What on earth has happened to the poor thing? Is that yours?

lol :) yes that was my EP3. I was going for the red/Black simoni racing look but putting the standard one back when my turbo will be fitted. There seems to be quite a bit of play in it. When Tom at TGM did my FRSU he said the aftermarket steering wheel isn't good.

I brought my EP3 in Summer 2006 and have had the car since then. This is will be a first for me doing a big turbo project (0ver400BHP) which will be roughly done in Jan/Feb 2012. I am 34 so not sure how much my insurance will be. I haven't driven a car faster than a standard EP3. The only thing that is positive is that I live in a good postcode area.

When I lived in Greater London my insurance was just over 1500 with 1yr NBC, age 32yrs old and parked in residential car park but when I moved to Farborough that went down to 650. Mind you I have a drive way and did very low mileage and put my partners name as second driver.

So do you think I should give Sky a call for a quote? I have another family car so turbo'd EP3 will not be used on a daily basis.

My current policy doesn't finish until April 2012 so would it be better to inform my current and then when my policy ends to renew with a company which specialises in mods. will I get a big charge for cancelling my policy with current insurance provider and switching to another like sky or better to inform current and renew just when it's time

Trying to establish which will save me money.

There's no point in getting a quote untill it's within 30 days of your renewal as that is all quotes are guaranteed for.

Thanks for the info on that MilanoChris. Is it worth Still getting a quote just to see what they offer so I have something to compare it to?

Perhaps, but insurance prices change all the time so you might find that the quote you are given now differs somewhat to what you would be given in April. Companies also have a habit of changing their eligibility criteria, such as age, NCB required, post code and such like.

Generally speaking though a quote now should be similar to what it would be in April but there are no guarantee's.

I agree with Chris. You could check with Sky/Greenlight etc now to see if they will actually insure you (I am sure they will because of age and post code etc). But as for a quote, they change day to day. I would definitely wait until your current policy runs out rather than cancelling it, if possible. It's not THAT long, your over half way into the policy so not worth losing the 1 years NCB you'll gain from that as that might bring your new policy down that little bit more if anything.

Yeah, can't help but think you should have thought this through before you started on the turbo project.

Maybe even run a few quotes through a couple of companies.
