EP3 Rattle at 3k rpm

You sure about this suits?

It used to happen on my 106 GTi and last winter on my S2000.

What happens is, the small groves in the belt apparently split, no mechanical faults will come from this, but it does tend to give off a squeak as it passes through the pulleys.

With the engine off I would simply put a pea sized bold on the belt (the side where it's in contact with the pully) and as soon as the engine turns over it sill the small splits in the belt and goes back to running smoothly.

Seems to then last for 6 months to a year.

its done 98k miles, quite a lot of miles, and i have ordered an oil filter which will arrive tomorrow and have some mobil oil ready so i will try some new oil. it was last serviced only 3k miles ago, and valve clearances were done yesterday. i honestly dont have a clue of what to try next, might try an engine specialist, they might have more luck than honda...

Had any luck?

The video is removed on the last page so I can't hear it exactly.

But the method Suits is using sounds good, I wouldn't put alot at all on the belt though as you don't want that to slip.

I have done this tonnes though - the top pulley assembly on the alt belt. Spray inside of that to death with something better than WD40 that won't dry out so quick, GT85 or 3in1 Silicone lubricant etc. The rattle/squeek that gets rid of is mad. I've told a few people to do it and they are instantly shocked at the difference it makes. Try it with your engine running from cold and listen to the rattle/squeek disappear instantly.

I went further and got underneath and lubed up all the pulleys on the assembly and it's sweet now.

Other rattles and squeeks come from mentioned before, mani heatsheild and driveshaft heatshield. Best thing I ever done to my car was remove the driveshaft heatshield and chuck it to f*ck!!

Update
I have changed the oil filter and new oil... still no change :( (i used a genuine Honda oil filter and castrol 5w30 fully syn oil)
i have also been to an "engine specialist" who told me he wouldn't know or even guess without taking the engine apart... great deal of help he was :D
I have lubed the belt up, and no change there either :( i spent 10 mins trying to pinpoint where the sound is coming from and i am almost 100% sure it is not the belt to the left of the engine, it sounds more to the right and actually inside the engine (approximately mid point of the engine), i can re-upload the video if you would like xdcx, a friend of mine who has only experience from his mechanics course at college said hes 100% sure it could be the chain inside the engine?? im running out of ideas and i think i may just ignore it until i find a solution (which is quite like having a fly on the end of your nose so not that easy to ignore :p

Never heard of chain making a noise but if it sounds like it is coming from the actual engine then that's really all it should be. That's not a cheap replacement on a guess though and I can't think of any way of properly confirming it is the chain :(

Can't see the vid, have the valve clearances been done? They can be very noisy.

Alternatively, could it be the CAT itself?

i will re upload the video, the valve clearances have been done 2 days ago, it seemed to quieten the rattle at idle, but that could just be my imagination, it is still there and very noticeable. Im pretty sure its not the cat because its coming from the actual engine bay, and i've been under the car whilst someones revving and definitely coming from engine. stay tuned for the re-upload.

heres the rattle video uploaded again

It gets a lot louder when you put it nearer the head. Unscrew the oil filler cap while it's idling and see if it gets louder. Does it make any odds if clutch is in or out. Always a start trying simple things like that even if it's nothing to do with it alteast it's a kick off the list.
Oh and if you take the filler cap off make sure you PUT IT BACK ON. simple mistake.

hey, i have tried playing with the clutch and there is no effect on the rattle from the clutch, so i think i can rule that out, i will give the oil filler cap a go, however i did replace my oil and filter yesterday and have had the cap on and off both with the car off and idle and still rattled. I'm not a mechanic so i wouldn't know, but is it possible to have the rocker cover/ top of the engine off whilst its running?? maybe i could pinpoint the sound??

I also thought i would add, the rattle ONLY happens after the car has reached a certain temperature, it never happens at cold and for the first 5-10 mins of driving, it purely happens after that once the car is warm.

If you take rocker cover off oil will fly everywhere. I thought if you took it off Nd it got louder still it would be I the head but if you have had a go well I wouldn't have a clue after that. Isn't the alternator?

i dont know what to try next lol, its just something thats quite unnoticeable but because i know its there, its extremely annoying. i dont really want to take it back to honda because i've been 4 times, spent quite a lot of money for valve clearances and engine mounts, and haven't really achieved any results.

Tbh I would never take my car to Honda. They are robbing bastards and just change stuff that doesn't need doing. In my opinion I wouldn't waste anymore money on it untill it sounds like it's getting worse. But that's just what I would do. Get a stethoscope and have a listen round. Lol.

Pulley side to me that, take fan belt off, check all pullyes/tensioner for play, tighten if needed and re-fit new fan belt.

cheers m1ke, i have tried lubing the belt up, but i will admit, when in person listening to the engine, it sounds like its on the opposite side to the pulley belts, it sounds like its in the top right of the engine block.
