rattle on cold start

If the car is started from cold i get a rattle from the engine for about 2-3 seconds then it go`s away. The car isnt losing any power and it doesnt do it if you restart it after a short stop, only happens when the car has been left 4-6 hours without being run.

Any ideas what may be causing this ?
 
This is quite common I think. Both my ep3s have done this over the years. Usually first thing in the morning when I start it. Apparently it's something to do with the starter motor staying engaged for a split second longer that makes the rattling sound. Someone else might be able to shed some more light on this but I've heard it's not dangerous or causing any damage as far as i know.
