Squeak / chirp on gear change

I have had a problem when changing up through the gears, I know my clutch is on its way out but I dont know if this is reated. When I am releasing the clutch and tapping the accelerater down there is a chirp from the front end. It is more pronounced if I stab at the throttle and has happened a few times when simply accelerating suddenly. I'm wondering if its a belt slipping? I am also wondering if it could be in any way linked to having just had coilovers fitted (I cant see how, but it was fine before I had them done)? Anyone got any suggestions? Its an EP3 with 46k on the clock by the way.

its not the spring on the accelerater pedal is it? I had mine squeaking last year, fixed it with some grease

I hope so! I'd feel like a prat for being worried about a noise that could be fixed so simply, but hey £5 fixes are always nice! Thanks for the suggestion, I will take a look. In the meanwhile, anyone else got any ideas?

It could be the altenator belt squeeking on part throttle. Check to see if the belt is within tollerence.

Is there a way that I can do that or is it a garage job? Its due its major service next month so I may leave it until then.

could be clutch squeal, like when brakes squeal but very short. usually down to tired clutch, in some cars the pinion shaft where the clutch plate slides on is supported at the far end by a bronze bush in the flywheel (not sure if the type-R has this) but these Used to get crap in them and start squealing. is your clutch pedal really low?

Not really, the pedal seems normal enough, the problem is getting steadily worse though, its happening every time I change gear now so I will be taking it into the garage this week! Irritating though, its become a bit of a money pit recently!

I'm not explaining myself well enough. does the sound, sound like a very bad trumpet but very short when you hit biting point during the gear shift? or when pulling off? mine has these symptoms and they come and go depending on the weather. but my clutch pedal biting point is getting low to the floor and I'm thinking it's time for a new clutch. lot's of money that I haven't got, again,as usual.

Aha, well the noise sounds a little like you describe. it only lasts for half a second or so and is the only noticable symptom (ie no juddering or such like) As for the pedal, well its the only car I drive, it hasnt suddenly changed, and does feel quite normal. But i do have to bang the clutch all the way down or it is not going to change!

Oh and it happens during the crossover between releasing the clutch, and dropping the accelerater!

I bought a clutch from a write off with 12k on its clock only thirty quid, but as the labour is the main cost, i'm debating buying a brand new one. Money is super tight though as I got married last week! I / we are super-skint!

If you're having to stamp the clutch through the footwell floor to change gear, you're definitely in need of a new clutch bud!

Like you mentioned, it's up for a major service soon - the garage will let you know for sure. Maybe you're best to put up with it 'til then...

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much the labour should be on a clutch replacement? I have rung two Honda dealers regarding the next service, and the two quotes were £346 and £670. As a result, I dont trust them for toffee!!!

I'm having mine done at a garage I am a local too. he's charging £150 for labour and the price of the clutch on top. it's worth asking around for replacing a clutch, never go to Honda unless it's warranty work or if you're completely nut's and loaded. the garage I use does IMO better work than Honda specialists. not that i'm faulting them as they do, do everything by the book, but he's.. just... cheaper .

Its not the heatshield on the CAT giving out a 'peep' is it???

Does it happen at a certain rev count or is it only when you chnage gear?

with mine it is on the clutch and you can feel it through your foot if you know what i mean. it sounds like chatter in a bush, like if you have a shaft spinning in a outer sleeve where tolerances are tight and lubrication is lost the shaft starts to chatter within the sleeve but for half a second.

I think given the trouble I have changing gears, I will assume its the clutch. It needs doing anyway, and hopefully the squeak will be sorted along with it! Honda have quoted £340 for labour alone on a clutch fit, so I will definately be going elsewhere!
