Squeaking noise - Any ideas?? (EP3)

Hi guys,

Ever since I got my CTR couple years back it's always made a odd squeaking noise at low speeds but only when I've got 2-3 passengers in the car with me. As that rarely is the case, I always forget to diagnose / get it fixed.

More recently it seems to be happening all of the time, even with just me in the car. Id say only 0-40mph, but hard to tell as engine noise may be covering it up.

It's specifically noticeable when doing a hill start, and still seems louder with passengers.

It's really hard to describe the sound, but it sounds a little like rubber squeaking, and can sound like it's 'rotational' (e.g. over and over). Quite difficult to tell where its coming from too.

Could this be suspension related? I've heard some people talk about droplink wear, does it sound like that? If so, anyone got a nice picture of where to look to see if this is the case?

Many thanks in advance,

Joe

i have same problem mate bt its when am at like 20mph and turning at low speeds ive heard it can be a common sound with the ep3s do i dont think its much to worry about but i would get it checked just incase.i keep meaning to get round to it aswell but keep forgetting lol if u get it sorted let us know what it was and vice versa cheers mate

It's worrying as it's definitely getting worse, I am wondering if it's suspension related. My commute to work changed about 2months ago, and now involves a mile of speed humps which is making me suspicious even though I crawl over them.

Any ideas anyone?????

Is there really no advice from anyone on this?

I'm now sure its coming from the front of the car, and steering related and it's definitely noticeably creaky steering left and ride even the most subtle of movements.

I'm now guessing it's a steering rack issue, and i've heard there are some common steering rack faults on EP3's mainly due to the rack boot needing regreasing.

But as I really don't know, ill have to take her to Honda :-(

sorry mate i still havent heard anything on it.tbh mine hasnt done the same noise for ages now.

I've got the same creaking noise coming from the steering wheel it comes and goes. only really creaks when on long
journeys it's really annoying. I read somewhere that if you poke a little hole in the steering rack boot and spray some
grease or wd40 in it it will stop the creaking but don't know it would work??

I'm sat in Honda at the moment, at £34 per 15mins of diagnosis I hope they have a clue!

First guy couldn't see anything wrong, but then I took him for a drive and it started again. He thinks it's rack / top mount related but not too sure.

If he can't find anything hes going to tighten up a few bolts and regrease a few things, see how it goes :-/

Hope they don't charge me £34 for the 10minute drive I took him on fs!

i have the most annoying squeek now too, usually when coasting at a slow speed its a high pitch squeel its driving me nuts

Mr Honda said it sounds like top mounts or the steering rack but couldn't be sure. So he tightened and lubed up my mounts and I've just got to see how it goes. Hope to God I don't need a new rack!

I hope that's what it is, far cheaper to replace compared to the rack. It creaks like hell off any hillstart now and remains for quite a while

Slow down guys I had an issue very similar to this on my old EP3 and it turned out that a stone had got up between the spring and guard at the top of the suspension strut. Jack the car up and get someone to turn the wheel whilst you listen at the wheel arches. This will help you diagnose.

No stones or anything like that, only makes the noise under load really (hill starts or with passengers) - it didn't make the noise whilst up on Honda's ramps turning

Well the noise is still there, but reduced a lot - and all Honda have done is grease up and tighten the top mounts. So I'm assuming it's them that need replacing - I'm just going to see how it goes over the next month before deciding to take it back in.

I had my top mounts replaced and in about a 2 weeks i got the creaking steering wheel nosie it could just need greasing up again? How much did they charge for for the job if you don't mind me asking.

Sounds suspicious if you've just had them replaced, I'd talk to the garage you had it done at to take a look tbh.

I was pleasantly surprised, they said £34 per 15mins of diagnostic, but my total charge for greasing and tightening was total of £19+vat so 22 something mate

Thanks for the info Dan, I did read similar before but when speaking to a friend that runs a garage he said that from next year them rack boots are on the MOT test list, and any splits like you'd have to make will definitely make it fail it's MOT :-/
