Strange issue

Hi guys...

I have an issue I'd like to get my head around. I have a 2003 type r EP3 with a few mods but no K-Pro, sometimes I'll be driving along and the car will feel like its resisting, feels lumpy and clogged up, when I put my foot down a bit the car will gargle for a second then blast off, what could this be down to?
Also if I pull away in first gear it'll also conk out as if it's flooded, I have to turn her off and restart and she will be ok until I come down a gear or 2, same as motorway cruising...be doing 70 then it'll feel boggy again and slow down...I have a full exhaust system but it was doing it before I had it fitted, it must be a breathing or fuel problem I'm guessing?? Any advice would be appreciated :)

What mods have you got?

If its got a de cat header without mapping that could be causing the issue and possible damage to the engine

Hi

The mods I have are:
Japspeed 4-1 manifold
Japspeed Decat
Scorpion cat back
Unbranded induction kit

But like I said, the car was doing this before I had it all fitted, I started the car this morning and it sounded like it was mis fairing, so I lifted the bonnet and the breather filter on the side of the engine was constantly sucking in air quite a lot, it normally only makes the sucking noise when I turn my car off it's weird

the EML light only comes on once a week which is due to the de-cat but i erase the codes and it's fine, the exhaust dont cause me any problems. I have an aftermarket induction kit and a small breather filter on the rocker cover, the small breather filter i think is the problem as most other CTR's have a return feed pipe from the rocker to the induction kit, like i said...this morning when it started up it sounded like it was mis firing and the small breahter filter was contantly sucking in air until i turned the car off and back on...was fine. A friend of mine said to try using a standard air box and see if the problem goes away. Only other thing i can think of would be to clean my throttle body, air filter and get new spark plugs and maybe a service?

Shaenei - The reason i upgraded the exhaust was because it had a hole in it and would rather upgrade than go OEM, also i thought my car was experiencing breathing problems hence the exhaust upgrade. It dont do it all the time, it's only every now and then but it's starting to become more regular.

De-Cat without a map would cause the engine to run very lean.

i understand the car would run lean but this is not the problem, im having breathing problems or dirty fuel in the system clogging something up...thats what it feels like when driving...something clogged up, give it some welly and it'll be ok until i drop down a gear or hit low revs.

Hazz

A what? I was thinking maybe buying a decent induction kit and cleaning up my throttle body, clean the o2 sensor and make sure it's not touching the car in any way, I'll investigate but any advice would be great

Heat soak, the process of your engine heating up your air filter and your engine getting hot air (less dense & therefore less oxygen to burn). It is a problem suffered by all open cone induction kits which sit near a hot engine.

I don't know what kit you have, but I've assumed if it is unbranded that it is likely a cheap ebay open cone filter similar to the AEM v2 and the K&N typhoon.

Never heard on one Hazz
It normally only does it when it's cold or crushing along at a steady speed : /

I have no idea my friend, I've only had the car a year now, yesterday I checked coil packs, spark plugs, cleaned air filter and breather filter...it seems a little better but I'll see how it goes, maybe my throttle body could do with a deep clean too, I'll give her a full service when I get back off holiday, I have a new stage 2 clutch and brembo discs and pads to be fitted :)
I have a feeling it was something to do with dirty fuel and grubby air filter

If I was you mate I would get the problem looked at by a specialist like TDI North, they will probably tell you what the problem is in five minutes.
Possibly could be the induction kit if its a cheap product get a Gruppe M/Tegiwa or Injen CAI installed and then look for a K-Pro install to get all your mods working together, might not be the cause but running an aftermarket manifold and decat without a professional remap isnt going to be doing the engine any favours.
Good luck pal...
