The Dreaded Rattle...In Neutral and low revs - Video on Page 2 * NOW FIXED * Page 2

Hi, i have the dreaded rattle which i am so far unable to figure out the source. I have so far removed the driveshaft heat shield and spacered my vtec cover.

Today i kept the engine running and tried putting pressure on the exhaust manifold heatshield but didn't stop it, i then removed 3 of the 4 nuts (because i had to go to work) of the manifold heatshield. Tomorrow i will remove the last one but it is quite hard to get to, can the bottom nuts be taken off from under the car??

Rattle is a very tinny rattling sound which is constant when neutral and low revs. I have noticed that the rattle gets slightly louder and rattles faster as the revs increase.

Any ideas of what it could be??
i will post a video tomorrow if the manifold heatshield doesn't solve it

I did think of that, but isn't the cat further down the car, almost under the handbrake/center cupholder?? the sound is mostly coming from just under the engine, but when im under the car, it sounds like its above the engine lol i was thinking if there was anything under the vtec cover?? anything that could possibly make a loudish rattle??

Videos on page 2 - i have removed the manifold heatshield today with no luck, any ideas????
its driving me crazy!!

tappets on the valve clearances, sound very noisy to me on that video, they should be checked every 25k

cheers for your help guys, i only bought it 4 months ago, and ive already put 6000 miles on it, and i know it was serviced 10000 miles before i bought it, so im guessing they didn't get checked along the way. Im working over the next few days, will it be ok to keep driving it for a few days?? should i avoid vtec and harsh driving??

right guys.. i know im sounding like a broken record, but this rattle is still there. I've now removed the driveshaft heatshield, the manifold heatshield, spaced my vtec cover and today had my valve clearances done. Rattle is still there, the valve clearance seems to have quietened it down a little at idle, but still persists. Any ideas what to try next?? i spoke to 3 mechanics today, 1 saying that it could be the valves overtime has made the top curved slightly and that the feeler gap should be slightly wider to compensate. I then spoke to 2 others who said it could be piston slap and also the oil hasn't been changed in around 25k miles, and they seemed to laugh at me and told me their first protocol would be to change it because it could have lost its viscosity. HELP!!

agree, change your oil.

piston slap is a possibility, or bent valves.

the curve/pit that is created in the rocker should need a thinner feeler gauge not a thicker one.

2 threads, same problem?

yea sorry, i didn't mean to open 2 threads, didn't think the first one opened cause my internet failed. I will change the oil and filter in the next couple of days. Do you rekon i take it back to honda and let them deal with it? only they seem to be charging the earth and not fixing anything and getting me no where :S i have a creak and a rattle and so far been to honda 4 times and spent well over 200 quid to be still in the same situation. If it is piston slap or bent valves, is it a costly job? will it just get worse and eventually break my engine??

honda will charge you the earth, where are you from mate?

you may want to take big ends into consideration also, very old non viscous oil can cause moving engine parts to fail prematurely including piston slap, due to the piston bores being worn away from no lubrication.

unfortunately, if it is one of these symptoms, It will probably be the most expensive expenditure you will ever have to pay out for on you car.

from paignton in devon, do i take it back to honda 1 last time?? see if they can find anything??

if they haven't found anything yet then why would they on the 5th try, change your oil and see if it makes a difference. otherwise seek a engine specialist who can diagnose the problem properly.

Rattle fixed!!
Was due to the timing chain tensioner
I will leave the video up for anyone with the same rattle :D
cost around £299 in total :D

that sounds like a taxi in the vid!

£300 isn't that much considering how bad it sounded, i would have dropped a load in my pants if my engine rattled like that.

haha yea sounds terrible, im just so happy its gone, had the rattle for little over 8 months now, with not 1 garage knowing exactly what it could be. Most actually said my engine was screwed

8 months with a timing chain tensioner fault, your very lucky you didnt need a new engine.
How the hell those garages couldnt diagnose that is a mystery to me.

I had the same fault on my pug 207GTI, it only did 18k miles before it failed, luckily it was done under warranty. Everything else failed on it after i had it fixed, my fault for buying a cr*p french car with a cr*p BMW engine in it.

my last car was a 206, worst car i have ever had. I am really lucky, i've read soo many stories about peoples chains skipping teeth so i was lucky. The only reason i did the chain was cause of a friend who's studying mechanics at college, just shows the professionals dont always know what they're talking about !
