Tyre inside worn help!

Messages

Ok so i posted a few days ago about a problem im having with 2002 EP3.

Problem:
Lowered the car 35m and started to get a load knocking/pinging when turning both ways even just slightly turning the wheel. Also get a clunk on both sides when going over pot holes or small bumps in the road.

Ok so changed the top mounts and tested the car, all was fine for first few miles no knocking/pinging at all. After a few miles i started to get a knocking noise from front near side (pinging again turning left) but is much better than befor.

I have also found the same side has killed the inside of the tyre off real bad in the last few weeks but all others are fine could this be the problem? ball joint, track rod ends, drop links

Not sure what to replace next i was hoping the top mounts would sort the problems out but has only helped and not sorted it 100%

Posted in wheels section as i was looking for info about the worn inside tyre and what the problem could be.

Many Thanks
Ian

Have you checked tracking and wheel allignment? if these are out it can wear your tyres. Maybe when you lowered the car it put these out.

You tightened everything up right??

Could be anything. As you said

Track rod ends
Ball joints
Drop links
Bushes...

Pinging sounds like the springs moving in the seat.

Really don't think its the springs as its only one side thats knocking the side with the worn inside tyre thats why im thinking ball joint or track rod ends.

But out of them what would course this inside tyre wear ?

If you have disconnected anything like the track rod end Or ball joint etc then the alignment should be done.

Inner edge wear is a tell tale sign of excessive camber.

Knocking..... Have a look at all the components.

We can't diagnose it over the net.

as for the knocking could be any of whats already been mentioned you'll have to go through the eliminating process but i'd check tracking and alignment for the tyre wear these should be checked when lowering to make sure the camber is correct. wrong camber settings can also effect tyre wear.

Thanks for all replys

Just ordered ball joints, drop links and track rod ends worth doing the lot then check camber and see if the problem sorted.

Fingers crossed
Thanks again

not really that much money, i just can't be arsed with the problems going on for weeks i hate driving it with knocking noise.
£100 all in for the parts and fitting and best to change the lot to rule out other problems later down the line.

Update:

Parts paid for today picking up at 4pm this afternoon just hope the rain cools of for a hour.
Will report back later !

Also got me a nice cold intake just removing the bumper as i type this to fit it :)

I would say the tyre wear is mostly from the camber or tracking being out. When lowering it can put the camber etc out this then puts more stress on other parts such as ball joints etc when you have wrong camber/toe settings. Your ball joints etc may have been wearing anyway due to mileage, age etc or other factors without you knowing and the extra stress caused them to start telling you their in pain:)
Good luck though let us know how it goes.

Update:

So far fitted

New top mounts x2
new ball joints x2
drop links x2
track rod ends x2
and yes still knocking its tits off :(

Last thing im trying is rack bushes in the morning if its still knocking im just going to burn the ****er and get me a old mk3 escort.

Before you burn it still get the allignment etc checked take it somewhere with lazer equipment and get them to take a look and adjust settings etc maybe they'll be able to find the fault.

Sounds good to me :)

I need to try something pal. I hate driving cars with knocking or bangs. :(

Really thought changing the top mounts would have sorted the problem out. Just feel lost at the min and not sure what to do next or where to start.

Thanks for the info will pop it down in the morning and see what they say before i get the petrol and lighter out :)
