Vtec question

Iv recently bought a pre face lift EP3 and im not sure if vtec is engaging properly.
Iv been out several times in my mates face lift model and when vtec kicks in you can really feel the "pull" and the noise changes quite drastically.
Mine seems fast enough and as the revs get higher it seems almost as loud as my mates but doesnt seem as urgent.
Ive checked my oil and its on the max, the car has FSH and no modifications.
Is it just the difference between the models or could i have a problem?

You said your car is standard but does he have any modifications? New air filter and or exhaust can cause a dramatic increase in noise and give a placebo of more acceleration.

He has a universal cone filter on his as far as i know but thats all.

so would a filter cause this change?

Yes, the filter will make a noise more so when Vtec kicks in.
