I had a feeling that this car had been fucked about with before, even thought it was 'standard' when I picked it up.

What does it do?
 
It stops your master cylinder from moving under load, basically reduces the 'spongy' feeling the OEM brakes can have.
 
Don't know, looks adjustable to me though from your pic....

Do you know if you're running standard or braided brake hoses? Also quality of brake pads can have some influence on pedal feel. People seem to recommend Ferodo DS2500s which I personally hate, I prefer redstuff or greenstuff but that's just opinion.
