FN2 Whining noise when steering.

Good evening, I’m new to this forum so hope I’m doing this correctly. I have a 2011 Type-R which has started making a whining noise when I steer. The noise is very loud inside the car but almost can’t be heard from the outside. The guys who always work on my car are for the first time to my knowledge clueless as to what could be causing it. My husband thinks it could be the steering rack but we don’t know for certain and I don’t really want to go to the expense of replacing it unless we know for certain that it’s necessary. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Louise.

It could be a number of things, as you said steering rack but it could be wishbones, bushes, top mounts, sometimes is trial and error to find the culprit of noises, they are a pita,

I would look at cheapest options and go from there,

Is it a whine or more of a creak? Does it happen at slow speeds or higher speed? How is it over bumps worse not as bad?

I have an EP3 had had a noise when steering was more of a creak for me but after changing ball joints, track rod ends, drop links it turned upt to be the top mount on the passenger side, obviously when changing any of them do both sides. Hope this helps.

Hi, it’s more of a creak and sounds like something is rubbing. I’ve had the top mounts checked which are fine, and drop links replaced but that hasn’t changed anything. I’ve got an awful feeling it’s going to be the steering rack that the issue. Speed, bumps, nothing changes the noise, it just gets louder the more the wheel is turned.

Could try ball joints first, but don't rule out the top mounts, mine seemed absolutely fine on my EP3 after checking them, no play or anything, hence, why that was the last thing I changed after doing everything else first but it was the top mounts after the process of elimination.

It is a lot cheaper to change the top mounts and ball joints before considering a new steering rack.
