FK2 Factory Alloys - Alu or Mag and the myths

Wheel Trim

Hi all,

My OEM Honda wheels needs refurb. The paint is litterally flaking off the wheels and i'm going to have the powder coated with a lasting finish rather the **** paint Honda seem to use.

Before I do this I am looking for someone who can supply wheel tape to fit the 19" wheel.

Anyone know anywhere as internet searches are drawing a blank.

Thanks,

Completely up to you but I wouldn't get magnesium alloy wheels powder coated.

No idea to be honest. Possibly the ratio that Honda specified but even so, I wouldn't want to risk weakening them.

I purchased a new alloy back in 2015 and the box clearly said aluminium magnesium.
People still argue today that they're not a magnesium type alloy and have them refurbished. I spotted someone on fk2 Instagram who had hers refurbished completely gloss black minus the red and they looked spot on.
You could also upgrade to the fk8 20s, straight swap but £573 each

I need to do some research into alloy magnesium and why powder coating would weaken them. Don't want that to happen.

I think its more the acid dip to remove old paint that does the damage, so if you blast them its ok. Thats my understanding anyway

Powder coating involves heating the wheel and paint for it to cure onto the wheel. Temps are higher (200°C) than curing paint (20°C), and that can weaken mag wheels.

Does anybody know a place in the north west area (I'm based in Chester) who can safely refurbish OEM fk2 wheels?

Mine aren't that bad but the odd scuff on 3 out of the 4 wheels that I have touched up is annoying, plus Honda's paint job is very poor.

Normally I would take to the wheel specialist but don't want to weaken these magnesium alloys, but has left me stuck with where to go from here.

Most powder coaters won't touch magnesium wheels because they're a right PITA to deal with. Magnesium is porous so the finish is prone to lifting due to gas escaping the metal, and needs an extra chromate process to try and limit it. It also needs to be carefully cooled and a precise temperature used, which means they can't put any other jobs in with it.

if it's done right, it's no problem. But doing it right is expensive and time consuming, so the majority of traders aren't interested and the majority of customers don't want to pay the price.

I wouldn't say they're a magnesium alloy, they're definitely aluminum but going by the box there is magnesium in there.
It maybe be the norm in alloys just not labelled up saying

It is not 6mm tape as i have just tried it on mine.
I would say its 7 or 8mm tape needed.
