FN2 Advice with previous ownership - FN2 Type R

Hi All,

New to the Type R owners forum, so as you probably read quite a lot, i'm sorry if this questions has been asked.

I'm in the market for an FN2 Type R, and just looking for some advice with regards to previous ownership. I've always steered away from cars with 5+ owners in 10 years, and most FN2's in my budget are between 2007 - 2008/9. I'm seeing a lot of them with 6, 7, and even 9 owners within 11 years, is this normal? I would write them off if I hadn't seen so many with the same amount of owners. They all vary, some have full service history, some have part with the 75k service all done, and some have none, I can confidently say I won't be touching anything with no service history. So I'm just wondering if this is normal with a car of this calibre. I haven't owned a Type R before, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

James

It's not uncommon. It's a bit of a stepping stone car in some ways. For a lot of people it'll be their first real step into the world of performance orientated cars. After a year or two they inevitably want something faster.

That said, there are plenty of cherished cars out there with only 1 or 2 owners. They just don't come up all that often and when they do, they're generally snapped up pretty quickly.

Thanks for the replies guys!

It probably would be a stepping stone for myself, I've owned a e46 330ci, but not experienced vtec! In terms of buying one, what amount of owners would be acceptable and not silly? I would think that buying one with 12 previous owners would make it pretty much impossible to sell, but saying that, it's had 12 previous owners so people still bought it!

Case by case basis pal, it only takes 1 of those 12 to be an absolute muppet and ruin the car. Equally, you could have a 1 owner car that's a complete turd.

The flip side is people who restore the car, you could have 10 bad owners followed by an absolute hero and end up with a good car.

Thank you.

Can I ask, is it the same rule when it comes to mileage, for instance, there could be one that has 125,000 miles, 7 owners, full service history, every MOT has passed with no advisories, or there could be one with 80,000 miles, 5 owners, some history and quite a few advisories that have been fixed.

Look on forums for cars up for sale, usually all history is posted somewhere on the forums and most are well kept and had money spent

Absolutely. Mine was 115k when I sold but meticulously maintained above and beyond the service schedule. A friend of mine has a 60k ep3, he's 2nd owner, rags it from cold & changes the oil once in a blue moon.

What's your budget, there's a cracking Champ white fn2 just popped up on civinfo, fully body kitted up for £8500 ONO

Sounds good.
My buying advice is to go on condition, honda service history unless done by pukka specialist, see if you can contact previous owners from V5.
If it feels right it probably is. There is plenty of info out there to help avoid the duffers e.g. look up the PCV valve and check that out on test drives.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice. I have watched a video on the PCV valve and to be honest, if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have known :).

I personally prefer to pay the premium of buying cars from main dealers if possible for peace of mind. I got my FN2 in 2015 from a Honda dealer and it had <50k on the clock, FSH and just the one previous owner who was known to the garage on a first-name basis. I paid a fair bit more than I'd have got one buying privately but for the guarantee of condition/history + convenience of part ex and finance options, I didn't mind so much. No idea if FN2's still show up at Honda garages anymore though.

But you should be alright if you follow the advice in this topic and look for the usual solid history file. FN2's don't seem to have been thrashed as hard as EP3's so I think it's easier to find better condition examples in general (though abused cars will obviously be out there).
