Beat Type R

Ohmigod! How's this for a prime piece of Japanese madness? It's a 1993 Honda Beat, which weighs around 3/4 of a ton and usually has around 60bhp - with a JDM ITRs B18C shoehorned in. Mental. I've got a Beat, and it feels quite quick as standard(even though it ain't), so god knows what it feels like with over three times the power. If anyone's interested, it's up for around $30,000 on ebay.

Marge

LOL marge a beat to take whiteleopard's lambo killer staus eh   (one of the users on the beat forum won a lambo at Santa pod)

I bet you can have so much fun with that. It would be interesting to see how it handles and if it upsets the balace and handling of the beat. In stock format a beat is a very balanced car, with a potential heavier engine and more power it must put a massive $hit eating grin on your face.

Didn't realise the links were dead. It seems to be a trackday special, and despite having lights is not road legal. I worked it out as having around 250bhp per tonne, assuming the engine is making its normal 200 ish bhp. However, given it has only 2 or 3 feet of 'zorst, and just can't have room for the ITRs air intake plumbing it's probably even more powerful than that. Crazy. Love it

I've looked at a few beats over the years. Would still really like one, although they are getting fairly old now. Are there any specialist out there or is it just a matter of right time right place?

Specialist in what way? - tuning? importing?

Both marge and myself have one, and there is a fairly healthy community for the beat, but as you say, they are knocking on in years. Saying that though my local Honda garage can still get parts and is still happy to service it. I secretly think they enjoy getting it in.

Specialist that import / sell them. I'm reading up on the beat forum at the moment, but it seems fairly quiet.
I appreciate I'm not gonna find a garage with a dozen in to choose from but I'd like as much choice as possible.
Any useful links?

Yeah the Beat forum is quiet, especially compared to here, but you have to consider that there may only be an estimated 100 to 150 Beats in the UK, and then only a cartain percentage of people will use a car forum.

Its worth while keeping an eye on http://www.u-ukhbc.co.uk and looking in the for sale section there as peple sell up. There is a yellow one for sale for 3k at the minute.

Regarding importers, maybe one of the usual importers like Newera/Litchfield may be able to help you out, I'm not %100 though, questions you would have to ask yourself.

I personally got mine through Autotrader from a garage in Mansfield.

I got mine privately for a shade under three grand last April. If you're thinking about buying one, they make the perfect second car. As it's a Honda, the age thing isn't really an issue, although they do rust so look very carefully at a possible purchase. Nothing i've ever driven makes me smile, and laugh out loud, like my Beat. Even 200 plus bhps worth of ATR.
It's just one of the best drivers cars there is. There'll be a good few at Gaydon on the 25th of March, if you're anywhere near.

Yeah I would like one, looked many times before. But now I'm in a position where I can afford to have one for fun.
There seems to be loads of yellow ones about, but the wife hates yellow. I'd like red personally, seems a nice silver one on ebay at the moment but it seems a bit pricey at £3700.
I'll just have to keep checking the beat forum for any that come up for sale.

I think the colour thing must be purely coincidental, as red Beats are far more common than yellow ones. I think they look as good in either colour, but am particularly fond of mine(it's red, as is AliAs). As a fun car, there is surely nothing better, especially if you consider its bargain cheap running costs(50mpg if you take it easy). I suspect a Suzuki Cappuccino could be as much fun, but it's not mid-engined, whereas Mazdas AZ1 is, but isn't a convertible. A Smart(?) Roadster is similar, but is way more money and looks like it was made by Tomy. See all those people who tow original two-seater Smart(?)cars around behind big motorhomes to use when they've parked up? They're the people that haven't heard of the Beat. One test drive and you'll be hooked, i guarantee.

I've had a test drive, that's why I keep coming back!
I've had a good read on the beats forum, have you had any of the 'typical' problems, ecu, distributor, roof? I appreciate these cars are now between 10-15 years old but I'd like a good original example. And that's my plan, to return it to how Mr honda intended, nice, clean and original.
Are there any specialist you use, parts etc? Sorry for all the questions but it's nice to talk to an owner for some inside knowledge! :D

So far the only repairs/parts I've done to mine in nearly 2 years is new discs and pads (also had a sticky caliper), replaced the horn because it died and had to get a patch of rust welded up to pass the mot. Apart from the horn - did that my self, all services, mots, parts are done at Holdcroft Honda. You just have to wait a few days for them to get the parts in from the main Honda parts depot in Europe. I did ask ABP at Crewe if they could service it etc and they said no problem as long as they can get the parts in from honda.

Other problems I have are a leaky roof (solved by not going out in the rain lol and keep it in a garage) and a touch of smoke occasionally, especially when coming off the gas and then re-applying the gas.

I've never regretted buying ours, and I reckon that when I eventually sell it I won't lose any money on it, apart from money spent keeping it on the road.
