Jealous would love for mine to be that clean lol.
Great job mate

Thanks Chris :) it does clean up quite well for a night swirl black lol
It will never be show clean though because of where I live and the terrible farm lanes but I am happy with how its come out

I went on a big run this weekend around North Wales/Mid Wales - ended up in Harlech and got plenty of shots from the day

It's been a while since I updated this thread so I thought it was about time I mentioned a few bits which have been done in the last month or so.

Firstly I purchased a new front badge as I removed the old one when spraying the grille matte black.
I decided to buck the trend and went for a carbon style badge rather than the usual red (most people will probably hate me for this). Purchased from a place in Ireland called Carbon culture and must admit I really like it, looks a bit more subtle even if some may say "It looks like a sport now" :)

Just need to get rid of the ghastly plate surrounds now, not actually sure what I was smoking when buying them (let alone fitting them)

When the car was last mapped at TDI North in August it never really felt right on the road, it wasn't particularly smooth and that jagged power/torque graph really did translate to the road. You could feel the car dip just after VTEC and then again at around 7K so I wasn't very pleased with it. This was no fault of TDI Norths, it was purely the header that was causing these issues so I wanted to get that resolved as soon as possible.

I had already purchased the PLM header and 27mm front ARB so it was a case of saving up a few quid and getting it booked in for a tweak.
During this time I decided to give another intake a try as I was getting a little bored of the Tegiwa, I had read so many interesting threads about Velocity stack intakes that I wanted to give one a try. Most people make their own which I originally planned to do but one came up for sale on CTRO for cheap with a oddysey race battery, I wanted the battery more than anything but as the intake was there too I snapped them both up.

The intake was used on a car running lots of Nitrous but fitment wise it was fine for mine if the battery was relocated.
Not one to attempt something like this myself I spoke to my best mate Gaz who is a mechanic and took all the bits to his for him to sort out. He removed the old battery easily enough and fitted the oddysey and used the extended terminals that were provided by the previous seller. Fitting the new intake wasn't as easy as expected as we decided to give it a trim so it was sitting right by the headlight rather than right against the arch.

It's not the prettiest of intakes but is certainly functional - This is what it looked like on the previous owners N20 powered EP3

It uses a HKS Mushroom filter which has been modified with a very large aluminium velocity stack (these filters are stacked as standard). That then is fitted to 80mm Samco hosing straight to the throttle body. It sounds very nice in on the crossover and is not quite as aggresive as the Tegiwa was.

Here is a quick video of it in action before it was mapped (private test track)

This will only be temporary because I want to make it look a little tidier under the bonnet, plan is run some 76mm Carbon fibre tubing but have a bend in the pipework so it faces the headlight more. Possible change to an ITG filter too with a huge V Stack for maximum airflow as well as running a CAF from the passenger side front fog cover. This will all happen in the new year.

Anyway once the intake was fitted it was time to give TDI a call and get it booked in for a map tweak, they slotted me in for saturday Nov 23rd which was ideal.
Took the new header with me as well as the ARB and arrived there bright & early :)

Ben got to work straight away with fitting the new header & ARB so I left him to it and fired up Forza 3 on the xbox
it was freezing outside so I figured it was best to keep myself busy in the waiting room. Took about 2 hours to sort out the manifold as due to it's design the subframe had to be removed to fit it correctly, and the 27mm Progress ARB is a very tight fit so there was lots of fettling to get it right. Anyway once done it went straight on the dyno for Paul to work his magic :)

Last time the car made a healthy 255bhp but the torque was very much well below what it should have been. This time round I was hoping to get that torque issue sorted out and I assumed the peak figure would be near the same, possibly more. Car was on the dyno for a good hour & half being tuned

Happy to say the car did well on the Dyno :)
final results were 256bhp & 174 lbs ft of torque (or near abouts)
Feels so much nicer to drive now, it made over 20lbs ft of torque in places which as we all know is a huge amount for these cars, that extra torque has removed all the flat spots and both the power & torque delivery is now so smooth. Peak power didn't really change much but I did kind of expect that, I think with a 70mm throttle body it may have made an extra couple of bhp because the J's racing TB is only 65mm.

I also think mileage plays a part too, mine is only on 48K miles and the higher mileage examples always seem to fair better. Maybe it just needs loosenig up a bit with an extra 20-30K miles
i'm happy though so who cares.
I'll post the graph up when I get chance, need to get it scanned first but i'll do that in the next couple of days.

Here is a couple of cars that were at TDI North on the day

600bhp Turbo FN2

Then this
:) K26 powered MB Chassis Civic running around 310bhp NA and over 200 lbs ft, more impressive than the FN2 purely for it's raw power
For those wondering it's a K24 bottom end from the Accord Type S Euro, K20 head from a CTR with a Brian Crower stroker kit making it a K26

That's about it for this year

Next Years Plans
- New Custom Intake
- Skunk 2 Intake Manifold
- SKunk 2 70mm Throttle Body

Ben :)

Hey buddy - great write up and as you know one of my favourite cars on the forum!!

i actually think the carbon H looks good, it probably wouldn't suit the other body colours but doesn't look out of place on the NHB and it will look a lot cleaner minus the plate surrounds.

the velocity stack looks huge mate and must be pushing a lot more air through the inlet, as you said a 70mm throttle body would be a good addition to make use of that extra air which is being funnelled into the smaller throttle body.

Don't blame you for firing up the Xbox whilst Ben fiddled about installing the new exhaust mani, I remember him swinging off my oem manifold swearing at the bolts which is when I retired to the waiting room for a brew haha.

It looks like Paul worked his magic again and it's good to see the upgrades corrected your torque figures 174lbft is a good result I think mine only hit 166lbft at peak so good numbers mate.

Look forward to seeing where it goes in the new year. :)

Cheers Pete :) appreciate it

Yeah I like the carbon badge too, liked it straight away so it's a keeper, plate surrounds definitely need to go though haha.
The intake is huge but really does need sorting out in the future, not the prettiest of things so i'll get that addressed in the new year. It will most likely be completely changed albeit a similar setup just with nicer looking parts :)

It was proper freezing on Saturday so I didn't fancy hanging about in the workshop :) Forza 3 in the warmth was ideal while Ben & Paul froze outside lol
Yeah the torque is awesome now, I took the car out for a good run yesterday and it's unbelievable how different it feels, VTEC comes in at 5K now opposed to 5600 and that extra torque really does make it more urgent

Previously it made 163lb ft whereas now it's 174 which is a big difference but pre-VTEC there is gains of over 25lbs ft which makes a huge difference to the drivability.
I think it's the CAT that will be restricting the torque on yours but least you know it's fully road legal and still making impressive numbers

Ben

My AEM fuel rail cracked like your Tegiwa rail.

went to a BDL one which was much thicker on my old car.

Yeah the AEM rails have been known to crack too, the tabs are twice as thick as the tegiwa rail however so I'm hoping this one won't let me down.

The engines do move a lot so dodgy engine mounts could be a cause of them breaking or a lot of harsh drag starts. Hopefully this one will last

Small Update - Feb 2014

I purchased a set of recently refurbished Brembo DC5 brake calipers from a chap off CTRO last month, he also included a set of S2000 discs, Ferodo DS2500 pads and Hel braided lines. These are currently at Grinspeed and i'm booked in for fitting on the March 7th

I have also had to purchase a set of 20mm hub centric wheel spacers to ensure the brakes clear the OEM wheels, actual required clearance is 17mm so that gives me an extra 3mm which will be fine. Had a few issues with the car lately including a split header :(
thankfully it wasn't as bad as it looked or sounded but my good mate Gaz put it all right within a couple of hours.

Brembos fitted to the previous owners Rotorex EP3

Video of the exhaust with the split header - it sounded like a V8 american dragster on the move

Basically the PLM header is constructed in several sections which slot into each other, these are then secured in place using a series of pins. This particular header has no flexi so it's not the best of set-ups, all the exhaust movement is putting stress on the header and as a result 3 of the supporting pins popped out and the header fell apart (whilst doing 70mph). It was literally in 2 pieces with a big gaping gap between where the 2 sections should be join (on the downpipe).

All is sorted now though although it will happen in again in the future so as advised by my mate Gaz he will be fitting a set of bolts with springs.
These are the same bolts & springs that you would normally have fitted to join youre backbox to the b-pipe, hopefully they will provide a little flex for the header. I already have the uprated engine mount inserts so that isn't an issue. The header just needs a bit of flex to prevent this happening again or worse.

Not much has happened over the winter months, just been fighting a losing battle to keep it clean more than anything.
I have a few plans for the car this year but won't be doing a great deal until the weather improves

The major clean I gave it back in late August seems to have done the trick as far as winter protection is concerned, 3 coats of dodo juice purple haze wax is still protecting the paint so i'll be looking to give it another big clean in April/May.

:smt043V8 civic! Sounds epic.

Are you anticipating any rubbing problems with the 20mm spacers? I'd love DC5 brembos, but the clearance issues put me off.

It sounds a lot quieter and refined now the header is fixed, must admit though it did sound very throaty with the split header

Not anticipating any rubbing issues mate although I will have to wait and see, it's only lowered 20mm at the front but I am running the bigger 215/45/17 tyres which fill the arches a bit more. Hopefully won't have any issues though. Yeah the DC5 brembo setup is probably the most cost effective upgrade although it's not ideal running spacers, it's more of an issue with the OEM wheels. If you get a set of wheels with the right offset then you can't get away without any spacers

Good stuff, I'm keen to hear how you get on. I've driven a couple DC5s and the brakes felt absolutely fantastic. If it all works beautifully, I may just have to start hunting for a set myself!

Really jealous of those calipers mate, they are going to look superb and will be a great upgrade to your braking set-up. :)

They always look a scarily tight fit with OEM wheels so its good you looked into the spacers beforehand for guaranteed fitment.

Cars looking really clean especially for this time of year mate, mine is filthy and want to give it a clean before Monday which is a bit of a joke with all this rain about haha.

V8 Vtec FTW!! ;)

Cheers Pete :) yeah not much room at all with the brembos mate, you will probably see my brakes when you visit Grinspeed next Tuesday as Stevie has them at his workshop. Hopefully should see a good improvement over the stock brakes, the calipers have just recently been refurbished with new pistons & seals so they should feel like new.

Mines filthy at the moment too mate, it's an impossible task to keep a night hawke black clean at this time of the year. The thick layer of dirt on mine is currently protecting the paint from road salt so it's not all bad :D. I have got another video of my V8 style civic on the move so I'll get that uploaded tomorrow ;)
