EP3 Buying another ep3! It's been a while.

I sold my EP3 years ago and I've had a few cars since but I've always missed the honda. I currently drive a 350Z but have decided to buy another type R for me and my girlfriend to share.

Anyway to cut a long story short i travelled 150 mile to cheshire car sales to view one and ended up putting a deposit down on it. The guys in the garage were not exactly profesional and I didn't get a great feeling from them or the area but the car itself looked ok, it was on 85k and had good history and a MOT with no advisorys, I'd also spent 2.5 hours traveling and really didn't fancy the journey being wasted, I'm supposed to be going to pick the car up on sunday.

I've since realized the garage is part of "cheshire performance" and has a very bad reputation. I've been a little put off the sale after reading some horror storys about them online.

Anyway another car has come up local to me, right on my doorstep infact. It's newer and it's in much better nick bodywork wise but the engine has done more miles. The garage gives the car a full MOT and service along with warranty and the bloke I spoke to made me feel much more comfortable than the guys at cheshire performance.

Here's the two cars....

Would you prefer the newer higher mile one in mint nick from a reputable garage or the older one that has a few marks here and there and lower miles.

I am a little put off by the higher miles but I know the car is good for it. I just think for 4 grand I should be able to find a cracking type R but ive been all over the place looking and I'm struggling to find one I'm really happy with.

Its a tough one!

I sold my ep3 about 3 months ago. I owned her for 3 years. Brought with 74k on and sold with 135k and she never skipped a beat. I looked after her and serviced her regularly. Was such a good car my friend brought it from me, he's done a clutch and timing chain and hope itl be a good car for him.

Iv been running around in a ep2 for the last 3months up until the weekend.

I purchased a premiere edition, with 67k on the clocks and paid £4500 from a friend who's owned the car for 2 years and worked at a garage.

you can get the odd bargain about. Are you specifically looking to buy from a garage? Iv seen a few decent facelift ep3 go for £3000/£3500 come up on eBay. Take a look at the one close by, it's not going to cost you anything. Ask if they would do the cam chain and provide warranty, check if it's had a clutch done and I'm sure it could be a good car. Check it's service history like any other car. High milage is a put off for me specially for £4000. Think you could get better value for money perhaps through a private sale.

hope that helps

Not sure what's going on with the exhaust on the Oakwood one but that just doesn't look right.

Haha yeah good spot! Looks like it could just be a cheap pattern part that someone's put on there? Perhaps baffles etc went in old exhaust/couldn't pass emissions

I've been looking around for a good EP3 as well but the amount of cars and the variety of condition and mileage make life difficult. So I decided to do some number crunching and pulled data from Autoexpress and Pistonheads, extracting the EP3 price against mileage. The analysis is not perfect as it does not factor in the premium for the special editions for add-ons. But it does give you a good view of how the cars depreciate and how mileage impacts pricing. This should help you to negotiate with sellers (especially dealers) and make an informed choice.

Each line shows the pricing curve for each model year. 2005 models have £1k-2k premium over he 02/03. 2004 is about the middle but as the mileage goes over 100k, then you're pretty much in the same price point as the 02/03 models. Finally, 02/03 models the depreciation has max'ed out and the pricing is all about the mileage.

Hope this helps.

im a little put off by both of them to be honest, they both seem to have ups and downs.
Mine sold for £4k. 74k on clock, facelift, ac, fogs. good condition FSH etc

like spazzer says you will get better value for money perhaps through a private sale.

Thanks. But have to admit it was a 5min job in Excel. I wish there was an app that did this for you. Would make buying and selling cars more transparent and straightforward.

Cheers lads, can't view the picture as I'm at work but I'll check it out later.

Saying as I've already put £200 down on the one in cheshire I'm swaying towards going back down and having another check over the car. I don't think it's priced badly considering it's from a dealership and like I said the history is great and no advisorys on the MOT. The dealer's rep is the only thing that really put me off and the fact that the garage is so far away from me.

Unfortunately their is nothing anywhere near me worth looking at privately at the minute and I'm in a hurry to get the car as my girlfriend needs it for work. I think if I head back to the garage and drive the car again it will help me make a choice. If anything doesn't feel right I'll just cut my losses on it and walk away.

I think pricing wise it's comparable with other 04 EP3s on similar mileage. So I think the main risk here is hidden problems that could cost a lot to fix. As you've already put down the £200 then I would agree with your plans to go back and have a good test drive and check throughly before buying.

maybe get someone to go with you and look over the car, get a mot certificate number before you go and check vosa history etc

Cheers lads.

I spent most of yesterday looking online and a car popped up on autotrader 5 minutes away from where I work in Newcastle . The car was with a trader, Full history, 3 lady owners, it's made in 05 and has only 80k on the clock. It was priced at 3,999. It's an absolute gem, not a mark on it, even the alloys are in mint nick. Snapped it straight up and even managed to knock a bit off the price. I feel really lucky, over the moon with it

I also spoke to the bank who say i should be able to claim my deposit back with them and they will get it from the dealers. Chuffed to bits.

very impressed!
