Clutch Release Bearing

Hi,

Warranty from car dealership ran out a month or so ago and it appears as though the Clutch Release Bearing is on its way out (Rattling/Grating noise disappears when clutch is pressed in). After driving a while the noise is loud and can be heard from outside. It sounds as though it is a heat shield rattling but the noise is dull.

The car has only done ~37k; the company I bought it off suggest phoning Honda and telling them the situation. He mentioned that sometimes with it being low miles they will offer to repair at a discount price, half or even sometimes in full.

Has anyone experienced this?

I've been told the part in question isn't detrimental to the running of the car, it is just an annoyance and sounds *****.

How much on average is it to repair the part? Could anyone offer a price who is perhaps local to me (Oldham).

An update for anyone suffering the same symptoms:-

Spoke to 4 different garages last night, the first fobbed me saying they wouldn't touch a Type R as they deal with `less complex` cars but hinted that it could be the Release Bearing or the Dual-mass Fly-wheel.

The second immediately told me my gearbox was `shot`!

So I phoned Bury Clutches, explained the symptoms and he immediately told me it would be £650+VAT to fix the problem. He sounded fairly confident so I asked what the problem was; he explained the gearbox bearings had failed or where failing.

He said the problem is very common and they fix 5 - 6 a month.

To confirm this, I phoned Penine Honda (Ashton-Under-Lyne) and spoke to the Service Manager. He confirmed the following:-

  1. It is NOT the Clutch Release Bearing; the noise I hear disappears when the clutch is pressed in, a release problem would manifest itself when pushing the clutch in.
  2. Gearbox bearings are on their way out.
  3. Gearbox needs taking out and bearings replaced.

I asked why such a crucial part of the car could fail at only ~5 years old and ~37k miles. He said it is down to the way it has been driven. Meaning, if the car has been used as for town driving it'll exert more wear on the bearings. This is crap is my eyes, a car is a car, it shouldn't matter how it is driven (to a degree), especially with the build quality of a Type R.

Does anyone think I have a case to phone Honda and ask for some kind of compensation?

Going seeing Unit 8 in Darwen tonight, hopefully they can shed some light on the problem too.

Have the same problem as you mate. Just bought my Type R from Stradstone with 36,000 miles.

After driving around 1,500 miles, i got the same exact problem. Its getting louder recently. Im from Malta and our roads are ******.

My mechanic said its comming from the gear box and its a real job to fix so he told me to leave it and put a ticker oil.

Dont think i can ignor this problem however as i dont want to harm my car. However thinks 700 is rly expensive.

Anyone else had this prob before who fixed it? Any reccomendations?

Depending on your location gents, I think that this is something that TDi or Unit 8 can look at. It is worth enquiring with these good Honda specialists for advice. Details can be found in the Trader section of the TRO boards.
