Could you fit a 215 or 225 on a standard 205 CTR rim?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times, but I've just read up on the posts where people use 215/40/17's on their CTR's.

I thought you could only use the standard width of 205?

Does anyone have 215/45's on that can comment?

I need to replace all 4 tyres soon and would appreciate any comments.

Well comfort wise they will be same as standard. You will just have 40mm more tyre on the road (width,10mm more per corner). Your speedo will still be correct and gearing ratio's will still be the same as the circumference of the rolling wheel will not have changed :)

Wrong, the circumference does change as it's not just the width that's changed, it's the tyre wall as well. The 40 and 45 is not a measurement, it's a percentage of the tyre width.

Tyre wall height on:

205/45 = 92.25mm speedo OEM Reading
205/40 = 82mm reads by 3% too fast
215/40 = 86mm reads by 2% too fast
215/45 = 96.75mm reads 1.5% too slow

Of the non standard sizes, 215/40 is the best size to go for as it's the closest to stock without the speedo reading too slow.

Thanks, that makes sense.

The previous owner of mine has 205/35/17s all round so i think ill put it back up to 215/40/17 when it comes to renewal

Thread revival;
I need to replace all 4 soon. Think I'm going to go for the 215/45/17 profile Falkern 452's.

Reasoning;
They are closest profile to standard 205/45/17's ( they are only 4.5mm larger), rather than the 215/40/17's which are 6.25mm smaller. And I'm not worried about speedo errors (too fast or too slow, errors are small.)

Also, from what I can see online, all Toyo R888's/Yokohama Advan 848R/Dunlop DZ03G tyres (Semi Slicks) come in 215/45/17's only (not the 215/40/17). Which suggests to me that this is the benchmark motorsport size, and there are no realistic advantages to having the lower profile.

I have 215/45/17 R888's on my Civic.

According to the tyre calculator site these are the differences in tyres from oem.

Diameter differnce
215/40/17 - 2.02%
215/45/17 - 1.43%
225/45/17 - 2.85%
235/40/17 - 0.58%

Speedo Difference @ 60mph
215/40/17 - 2.064% too fast
215/45/17 - 1.443% too slow
225/45/17 - 2.929% too slow
235/40/17 - 0.574% too slow
