does turbocharging type r wreck engine

I bought a type r civic about a month ago, it has obviuosly only be returned to standard for sale. I have seen it on you tube pushing out 310 bhp on rolling road. I thought I bought a completely standard car. I'm now concerned the guy has been thrashing the life out of it. There's only 45k miles on it. My question is would having it turbocharged damage engine. I think this was done for 15k miles. I'm guessing the map hasn't been removed as it feels as torquey as my old 172 cup. What gain would you expect to see from remap with only mod being a cai aem?

Turbocharging if done right and kept within the correct tolerance's will not wreck a k20. Do you have any idea what garage installed the turbo? Can you contact the previous owner? I wouldn't expect massive gains from just a CAI.

Would pushing out that bhp not wreck clutch or gear box? On my phone here, get you link later mate. I'm a bit annoyed as I was hoping to get a type r which wasn't thrashed, I know the chances of that is :)small

as long as it was mapped well, and has the oil kept topped up the K20 will take an amazing amount of punishment

The box can take the extra load as long as the previous owner didn't mis-shift or anything. I'm not entirely sure about the clutch. I would imagine an uprated one would be fitted. Do you know if it's an OEM clutch or not?

No idea mate, if it was 300 bhp I'd say it has uprated clutch. I do know it has a dc5 gearbox which whines a little at low revs.changed oil in it which quiet it down a bit. Was hardly a drop in it previously.think main shaft bearing is on its way out. Do you think I'll get anther while out of it yet?

I know how you feel mate. Thats why i made sure when i got my car it had rather low mileage (60k for an 04 plate)... that it was completely standard and that it had a full service history. I'm not saying there will be any problems with your car but knowing it had a turbo on it at one point would worry me too lol. I'm pretty sure if the turbo was just taken off it's not mapped correctly? You should maybe look at getting a propper remap - Also have the other engine componetns been upgraded? manifold/exhaust etc? I can't see anyone just slapping a turbo on a standard ep3

take it to a specialist and ask them to do a check on the car it might cost a pretty penny but in the long run it could save you a lot.

If it was running boost and all the parts have been taken off it eg. Manifold, Exhaust, IC, etc. I would say it was back on an OEM ECU, for a turbo setup i would expect to be using a KPro ECU at least. You would need this for it to be setup and mapped correctly. I'd be more concerned as to why it has a DC5 box on it, the engine is pretty bombproof as long as you don't get stupid with the boost pressure, the box is more of a concern, especially as you say it may have issues. Put up some links to the videos as some people on here may recognise it and be able to put you in the right direction as to some of it's history ;)

DC5 box could have been purchased cheaply; it contains an LSD - it's a good/cheaper way to get hold of a diff...

check for a return tapin on the sump, if so your be sorted to bolt another turbo back on. also dc5 box shorter ratios which is a win!
