EP3 stuttering and surging.

Hi all

I have read a few post and looked at a few different issue but can't find anything definitive.

I bought out EP3 a few weeks ago all was fine but I noticed a slight hesitation and slight surging at low rpm.

The mods to the car are

Cold air AEM (filter in bumper)
A magnex cat back exhaust

I recently changed to back box to a spoon style one and since noticed the problem is worse.

On a very very wet day and low fuel the car started to run very poorly missfiring and cutting out when we tried to accelerate. As if I turned the ignition off.

We left it and thought it was headgasket but after further investigation have hopefully ruled that out.

Car is now running fin again but it's still stuttering and surging from time to time at low rpm.

We tried another set of plugs but no change...

Any opinions?

Car has FSH and 72k miles on the clock.

One explanation was the ECU struggling with the changes...

Hi no engine management light. The only time that can on was when I unplugged the TPS to see its effect.

Problem isn't as bad once engine and oil is fully up to temp like 20mins driving. Cold starts, short journeys problem is much worse.

I take it the oil level is fine?

O2 sensor is on the cat (pre or post, can't remember which is which) but it typically throws a fault code if there's an issue.

I think so as well Lottie but you'd expect the EML to be on with a misfire or crankshaft position sensor code.

I think people have been quoted around £800 but I'm not 100% sure. Depends who does your work I guess, specialist will always be cheaper than a dealer.

Depends what the issue is.

Indeed.

Have you checked all the bulbs are there, I know a member a while back purchased second hand and a bulb had been removed to hide the issue.

different car I know, but I had this issue with my old golf GTI. it turned out to be a shattered pressure plate (clutch). it took forever to find as its not the first thing you would think of. didnt really get any better once car warmed up though.

I had the same surging issue and it was a stretched timing chain. But my car had done alot more than 75K

It is looking like it may be a coil pack. After swapping one out with a spare i had car feels much crisper and smoother. Going to get 4 second hand low mileage ones and do a full service on it.

Coil packs have arrived and car feels MUCH better!

Also found the cause of the original need to create this thread....

Drum roll please....

AEM CAI with hydro sock

Been noticing the missing and bogging has returned recently in heavy rain. Went through a puddle today guess what! Car was then a bag of cr@p after, miss firing, bogging and not revving cleanly at all but once filter had dryer a little I could then return to normal driving. Several times this evening I went through a puddle and it instantly started to miss and bog. (Note: I always lift off and close the throttle through puddles and wait before I apply the gas again) but still every time it caused a problem to running.

I am going to get a standard box and get rid of this kit! If it was a EK9 the problem wouldn't be such a problem (I have one on my 9) as the intake is on the r/h away from all the big puddles near the verges!

So glad we have got to the bottom of this. And all I bought was second hand coil packs and serviceable items to carry out a full service.

Thanks for everyone's help, I am confident I can get the car running how it should.

I did read a guy on here hydro locked his ep3 with this kit... Not good..

One of the reasons I give these kits a wide berth for the K20.

For me though in the ATR it shouldn't be too bad as it's on the drivers side, like the EK9/DC2.
