Grinding sound at start up

Hi Guys,

Got a problem i need help diagnosing. Recently when starting my car just after the engine burst into life i get this horrible grinding sound for a second.

At first i thought i was being a nonce and holding the key to long, but after doing some searches i've come across some possibilities.

Some people are saying it's the starter motor. But when having this "fix/repaired" the sound/problem remains.

Others have said it's to do with the oil settling in the engine.

And some have just said it's a characteristics and while it sounds horrible it's not doing any damage.

It doesn't seem to happen if i've been driving awhile and come back to the car 2-3 mins later. Only from cold...but not always.

Tried to record the sound on my phone, you might need to whack your speakers up a bit.

Any help, info or reassurance would be welcome.

Cheers guys.

Mine does this too, I call it a Civic sneeze. I swear there were a load of threads about this and I may have posted in one.

EDIT: a reassuring post from Mr Dott though http://type-r-owners.co.uk/forums/s...-first-started&p=417310&viewfull=1#post417310

Thanks Danga, I only searched a few years back so missed that one. Its reassuring to see Mr Dott has encountered the same problem, just not something i want to have to explain when it comes to sell time :).

Thanks again.

Not a problem mate. These cars have alot of common problems thinking about it, so this may be last on the list of things to explain to the buyer

Its just the starter motor hanging on slighty due to the cold weather, many of cars do it this time of year, my DC5 does it sometimes when its cold but when its warm doesnt do it again, no need to worry about it.

Nothing to worry about, as said its the starter motor doing a extra turn as its cold.

Happens to most K20'd cars.

Honda did replace a few under warranty I believe to worried customers but the sound/problem persisted.

Mine does this, my mate the mechanic lubricated the starter motor somehow last year and it stopped. Its happening again this winter though! I was going to replace the starter motor, but from the looks of things its not worth it!

ah this makes me sleep a bit better , mine hasdone it a few times too wasnt too sure what on earth it was at all, now i know
