Key fob!

Went to Tesco last night locked the car with the key fob and when I came back to it tried to unlock it with the key fob but it didnt. Opened the car with the key but didnt have the small red flashing light on the dashboard but put key in and had full electrics radio, fan etc. Is it simply my battery in the key fob is dead or is it something else as had to get the car recovered and tried spare fob at home but no joy. 2002 civic

Right really need some help. Changed key fob battery but still not able to unlock/lock the car with the fob, no red flashing security light on the dash and obviously cant start the car. Any ideas as I really nees to get this working soon.

If your unable to start the car it would suggest the key needs to be reprogrammed to the car, as to why it would suddenly 'forget' I wouldn't know I'm afraid. Your best bet in my opinion is to get a specialist to look at it who has the ability to reprogram keys.

Hey thanks for the reply, would that also mean that I couldn't use the fob to lock the car? and that the red light doesn't flash on the dashboard?

If the fob has lost communication with the car then you won't be able to use it to lock the car. I would suspect the light on the dash is indicating the immobiliser and alarm has been set.
You will need to lock the car by putting the key into the drivers door lock.

yeah I have to open the car with the key but when I open it up I don't have the red flashing light on the dash but can put the key in and turn it all dash lights come on can get the radio on, fans blowing but car wont start but when I remove the key I get the flashing green key as normal. So is it that the key fob is knackered or a bigger problem with my immobiliser/ alarm as tried to reset key fob but it doesn't do anything. Even sat in the car locked the doors waited and moved around and no alarm going off at all.

It could easily be something as simple as your key has just died, and you need to buy and get programmed a new one. Honestly your best bet is to get a mobile locksmith who can programme keys to come have a look.

Spoke to h&p and the guy said it looks like my alarm board has gone as fobs and security light dont work and alarm doesnt go off. Does anyone know how to disable the alarm so I can at least get the car started.

The alarm is easy to disable but will not enable the car to start. To start the car you would need to also disable the immobiliser but I believe this may well be incorporated in the ecu.

Just a thought, but have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few mins. This does some kind of ECU refresh - gotta be worth a try!

Hi yeah tried that a few times then tried to reset the fob but no joy. It must be something to do with the car side of things as I am not getting the red flashing led on the dash so just need to try and find out how to get it started without the fob as the key side of things is working just cant start it until alarm is disengaged. Can anybody tell me how to do that?

I'm sorry, I don't know about that mate. Might be worth giving Honda a quick call? I've found them helpful in the past. Another thing I just thought of was a fuse - don't even know if there is one but that could be worth finding out about...

Update!!!!! Finally got alarm circuit board to H&P and they couldn't have been more helpful. Got board refurbed for £144 delivered next day delivery, receiver on board was knackered and they refurbed both of my fobs for the same price as just a board refurb. Car now running again well chuffed so glad I didn't put into Honda as they tried to rip me off big time !!

I know its too late to help you but it may help others that read this thread. I had a similar problem, the fobs to mine wouldn't work at all, I tried doing the reprogram thing with the ignition and button pressing etc. When that didnt work I took it to the boys at honda who told me it was the alarm receiver and wanted £260 to supply and fit. They gave me a print out quote with the part number and a quick google showed me what it was and I was able to pick one up from a scrapyard for a tenner! Simply swapped my one for the scrapyard one and could reprogram the key fob and all now works!
