MOT questions

Do aftermarket bucket seats have to be E approved to pass an MOT? And does it matter that access to the rear seats (3 door car) is near impossible?

No the seats do not have to be E approved.
The seats have to lock so they will not tilt forward in an accident.
Access to the rear seats is necessary to check the rear seat belts
and that the rear seats lock in the upright position if a hatch back
A reason for refusal to issue a pass certificate would be that the rear seat belts are inaccessable for checking.

Now if you want to remove the rear seats and the seat belts for the MOT
then only seats that are fitted require seat belts and therefore they will not be testable.
One problem though, the passenger seating capacity entered onto the MOT computer system would be amended to read 1 passenger and therefore if you susequently replace the seats and belts after the MOT then get stopped by Mr. Plod his records will show 1 passenger seat when you have 3/4 if you have centre lap belt
Not much chance of that happening though

Hope this helps

Cheers dude. The MOT tester could reach the rear seat belts from the front, just it would be a struggle to get in past his shoulder is he is a fan of Fray Bentos. Or just reach in from the front via the gap between the front seats.

Most MOT testers would probably fail it, in the manual it does say "easily accessable" and that probably would not be the case. Nothing thats awkward (think of health & safety) is really allowed, they might strain themselves reaching over to the rear belts. Remember they have to pull the whole belt out, plug it into the buckle pull on it to make sure it does not pop out and thats 3 times if you have 3 seats in the back.
Suggest you take the seats and belts out before the test

Nick just fit the bucket seat with sliding seat rails... or just explain to the MOT tester the prob before you book the MOT and see if he will be ok with it.

Yeah I am going to ask a local MOT garage for a quick look with them fitted. They slide forward but not enough to get in the back with ease.
