Need a bit of advice.

About a year ago some old guy clipped my drivers side wing mirror. I went to my local Honda dealer on another matter about two weeks later and they said. The repeater isn't working you will have to get the whole unit replaced.

I went outside and the repeater was working so I just went home thinking nothing off it. The repeater has worked since then until today.

Question 1 Can I get a repeater as other Honda garages have said I can or do I get a new wing mirror?

I feel I am getting ripped off by my local garage as they keep saying bulbs are dead and things need doing even though the car runs like a dream. A few months a go they said I need four bolts for my heat shield which is gonna cost £400, I then went in a few weeks ago and the mechanic said your cat is dying.

Question 2 Can I take the heat shield off?

Question 3 Was the mechanic mistaken and heard the heat shield rattling and mistook it for the car.

Question 4 Are they trying to rip me off.

Thanks for any advice.

Steve

Their quote will be for labour as I think that heatshield is bolted on under the carpet. So you will have to remove the seats and plastic trims to get the carpet up to access them. Bit of a ******* of a job just to change four bolts.

I would get under the car and check the bolts myself to see if they are loose or broken. If not then leave them and forget about it but if they are loose or broken then buy the bolts and strip the car yourself to remove and replace them.

It also might be worth a try to strip the wing mirror down to see if their is a loose connection to the led's. Could be a simple fix rather than buying a new strip from Honda or Lings.

What about the cat do you think he was mistaken or do you reckon their trying to rip me off, the car runs like a dream, never has misfired and sounds like it always has.

I do occasionally get a scraping sound when I fire it up but thats only ever when its been raining. I asked the mechanic if there was a flat spot on the clutch plate and he said that was impossible because I would get the scraping noise more often.

Scraping sound will be the starter motor sticking and not disengaging when the engine fires. Very common and nothing to worry about.

ah cool, the guy at honda said he had never heard of it before and he was supposed to be the no.1 mechanic. Its weird though that it only ever happens when its been raining a lot. Wonder if its sticking because of condensation.

He's rite , mine will do it very rarely.

there ripping you off, or it could be like my car was / is ... The heat shild was rusted completely so I cut the four bolt off, disconnected the sensors and the shields fell off , job done , no problems . So them being a "proper garage" it has to be fix the most expensive way possible.. Replace the cat

edit : I'm 99% sure there is not ganna be a bolt going all the way through the body for a heat shild

It's not the cat heatshields he is talking about. Its the exhaust tunnel heatshields fixed to the floor of the car and to get to them means removing the carpet imo.

No nuts or bolts for the heat shield under the carpet. 99% they thread into the floor. I had my carpet out for 12 months, swapping seats etc, I never came across anything that bolted through the floor except the seat bolts and the handbrake.

A lad I know has a type r and he said he just yanked his heatshield off, not sure why he did but he has an aftermarket exhaust on his so that could be the reason. I think I will just take it off and see if I ever get a rattle again, if I dont then I know they were trying to rip me off.

I am certainly not paying £400 for 4 bolts.

I took the cat heat shield off mine a couple years back. no problems what so ever. I've done loads of long distance journeys since then too.

As for main dealers, my advice is not to use them. Purely because you pay top price and may even end up with an apprentice working on your car. I sometimes will source parts from them however. Better off using a specialist garage for jobs that require knowledge. For simple jobs like tyres and brakes, any reputable garage will do in my opinion.

Even still , there no blots going all the way through the floor for a heat shild , it's a rip off and a 10 min job ( spray the bolts with lube ;)

weird the repeater is working again. Went over a little speed bump at Asda and it started working.

Aye am begging to realise that.

Either you have a loose connection in your mirror or there's a knackered led.
I personally would go to a garage for brakes , it's easy to do yourself and you save a fortune.
It is hard to find a good garage you can trust to be honest.

The repeater issue sounds like a dodgy connection.

Although there are a number of heat shields, I assume they are talking about the one that is attached to the cat (by 4 bolts suspiciously). Mine has been removed (by Honda as it happens) for a number of years with no issues. (There is a heat shield between the cat and the floor anyway).

I was also told that my cat was "rattling" and they suggested to leave it unless I had £1200 to spare, took it to a small local garage and it turned out it was the cat/manifold gasket leaking. I'm not suggesting it was reported on purpose, but definitely incorrectly diagnosed.
What's your mileage, mines on 140000+ and the cat is still fine.
If it's driving fine, I would be tempted to leave alone or at least get a second opinion.
Also, re cat failure, I thought that the 2 x o2 sensors are designed to monitor the cat and throw up a fault code if
it is not performing correctly.
Somebody may be able to comment further.

I've seen cat for ep3s (used) go for 100£ , you would have to be mad to pay £1200 for that.
with the wing mirror a good way would be to replace the whole unit with a good second hand one.
Theres lots of people breakig these cars,/ if the repeater still goes dodgy there's a good charnce it would be further down the loom meaning a fuse or replay. I would of its the bulb/led ***
