DC2 DB8 DC5 Newbie, looking at getting a DC5.

Hey guys, this is my first post so nice to meet you all. Ive previously owned a RB Clio 182 for a few years and sold it last year due to changing my job (which came with a hire car). Its now come for me to get something exciting again... Which brings me here.

I'm looking at Megane 230 f1's and the dc5 type R.
Iv'e spent a few hours browsing this forum so I feel I have a reasonably clear understanding of the car.

My criteria is basically a step up in performance from the clio while retaining similar fuel economy as I will no doubt use the car for commuting at various points during its ownership.

Couple of points i'd like some help with, number plates firstly... I've noticed when doing insurance quotes (compare the meerkat as its quick) that the integra comes up as a civic type R or other honda model, why?

Second point, I'd like some opinions on buying a cat D car. Is it a silly move?

Sorry for the essay.

Hey there. I've had my DC5 since February and I love it to bits. It has a fair few performance mods but will still turn 35-40mpg on a run. With a bit of VTec action I'm probably getting higher 20's. the plates can be an issue due to them being imports. Best thing to do. Is call a specialist insurer like SKY or Greenlight as they know the cars well and understand what you are talking about. I personally can recommend Greenlight, they gave me a fantastic quote for my own car and have loads of very knowledgeable people working for them. If you do an online quote, they usually give you a call back to talk through any mods on the car you have seen or purchased. As for the cars themselves, I was told by an ex DC5 owner on here, I would be owning the most fun car that gives the best mpg, I have ever driven. And he was absolutely correct. The car m ales me smile every time I drive it, wether it be a quick nip into town or a nice long blast on some b-roads. Let us know how you go on bud, and even if you don't get the Honda, get some pics of what you do choose as we all like to see any car on here ;)

Oh and forgot to add, NO on the Cat D cars, unless you buy it still damaged and do the repairs yourself. Just avoid them altogether if I was you and a lot on here will say exactly the same.

This ^

Try sainsbury's HERE for an ins quote as well ;)

Thanks for the advice there, thats fair enough, did a quote quickly through sainsburys and was about 1300 which is normal for my postcode so not too bad.
NYA the car sounds perfect for me because I do really want a jeckel and hyde car :)

With regards to cat D, I think everyone would generally avoid one but they do offer a significant saving. Surely they would have to have been repaired to a good standard? Also cat D is for fair light damage no?

I see the dc5 uses a timing chain rather than belt, is there a major service that needs to be carried out during the cars lifetime?

Appreciate the replies.

DC5's come with various panel gaps and mismatch paint from the factory (due to them being painted at different places), so getting a Cat anything and having even worse panel gaps is a no go.

I went to see an 'apparent' Cad D in Nottingham, I drove from Newcastle to view it and as soon as I seen it I didn't even speak to the garage owner I just walked straight back out and headed back on my 2.5hr drive home. Knob head completely filled me with bullshit on the phone.

I'm sorry Liam, but they don't.

A good straight dc5 is all one colour with no mismatches in shades or dodgy panels gaps.

Whoever told you that is full of sh1t.

Having had 4 DC5s myself, I've never had one with any dodgy gaps or paint.

I know Porthos and Gok were telling me the panel gaps can vary due to the DC5 being hand built. This is the only thing I've heard regarding the build quality though.

Oh and ^LX,the timing chain is usually around 100,000 recommended change. It is simple to do yourself but probably best left to a good garage or specialist to do it. The only other big thing is the Valve Clearances which are usually around 60,000 miles. Again not a complicated job.

I've never read that and I've been on that forum for 7years

Me neither. There should be no paint mismatch at all.

You's also must have clearly never read the buyers guide in your 7 years on the club:
http://www.itr-dc5.com/forum/index....uyers-guide/?hl=+painted++factory#entry242969

Bumpers a different colour to the rest of the body – don’t worry, Honda used to spray bumpers away from the cars in the factory and so would always come in various shades of the same colour (my step-dads S2000 had this and was new from factory) when compared to the main shell.

LOL, I helped write that buyers guide. (A Dotty says below, alot of it is Kingstons opinion however)

What it's getting at there is, as with many cars now, you can get a very slight colour differential between the plastics (Bumpers) and the metal work (Wings) etc.

Happens on alot of cars these days.

I wouldn't class that as a colour mismatch however.

As for them being handbuilt, they will still be checked for panel gap and adjusted at QC, regardless.

So panel gaps should be uniform.

Me neither. There should be no paint mismatch at all.

Also please see the topic that I made only 2 months ago regarding panel gaps:
http://www.itr-dc5.com/forum/index.php?/topic/32128-hows-a-dc5-for-panel-gaps/?hl=+panel++gap

Now don't go jumping down my throat, I'm not saying it's due to shoddy workmanship, it could just be a loose bolt or whatever, but all I was saying was there is clearly a known issue with panel gaps (for whatever reason) on a DC5. So I'd stay away from anything (i.e. cat D) that is gonna make a known issue, even worse.

That's a general buyers guide based on an individual opinion (actually the op of that is a bit of a plonker)

While there's some good information in the post there's also a lot of personal opinion.

The ones with mismatches tend to be the ones with ghastly body kits on.

Willie at TGM hates to respray champ white as its a right pain apparently.
