RenaultSport Clio 182 Trophy

Will have to sort meeting up. Spoke to G about getting together so would be cool if we could manage something similar to last time (brick not included) and with mini me in tow :D

Just took an hour to read all this (in work time oops!) - fantastic write up for a great car - it sounds like its been an eventful journey for you!

Ben - that would be great! I haven't seen any of you guys for years so count me in. Any ideas on dates yet or are you thinking of waiting until Christmas and New Year are out of the way?

Cheers, Skip. Sorry it took up your precious working time... ...and glad you enjoyed the read. Eventful? Yeah, I'll go with that!

I would say the new year, but I need to actually communicate with G. I'm sure we left it to the woman last time

That is really nice mate, love it in red.

My mates just got a silver 182, he thinks it's a cup, but im not sure. It has some awful Apex springs i think they are, it's far to low, surely if it was a cup you'd keep the standard springs?

What a build thread. I throughly enjoyed reading that.......although I have always said this about French cars (issues in one form or another ).

BUT....I still like the car, and as said, real labour of love.

Nice read. Sounds like a bit of a mare, but I think you are right to continue to persevere with the car for the reasons you have mentioned. Just hope the gremlins foad soon, so you can go and enjoy it more.

Thanks, Grov. The only problem I have with the red is that it is starting to fade in places - especially the plastic bits and panels! The door handles are worst so they'll hopefully be off and replaced sometime early next year. The limited edition red looks good... but pink is not so good!

Hmmm, sounds like your mate's 182 has interesting springs. If it was a Cup then yes, you'd probably want to stick with the standard setup (unless you are looking to go to a hi-spec coilover setup whereby the cr&ppy Apex springs would not be welcome!) Does it have the 'Cup' extras that identify it as a Cup?

Cheers danga, glad you enjoyed the read. French cars, eh? I'm told it's "French car character"...

I won't argue with you, mate. The sooner the gremlins are gone the better. In one respect I'm glad the problems are being sorted now (over the winter months) so that I can start afresh next year and get out and enjoy it. Well, that's the plan. :D

Andy would a black wrap look ok on the door handles as I see you have black headlight washer covers?

Funnily enough I have been considering something along those lines, Ben. I was looking to get carbon fibre surrounds for the exhaust and considering black wrap on the handles and wing mirrors. I might have to get the old Photoshop out at some point and try a few experiments!

I was also contemplating getting a custom interior done at some point. This was going to happen last year but I had trouble getting a decent company to do it. It will no doubt have to wait sometime now as I need to get the current issues fixed and I have the next round of mod's already coming together so... The custom interior would be quite simple - Alcantara retrim with a bit of custom embroidery to match the Trophy decal and detailing.

With your photoshop skills it should give you a good idea. The carbon fibre around the exhaust surrounds would be cool. I looked into wrapping some of the interior and the 3M stuff looks good, you shape it with the aid of a hair dryer

That is one hell of a read Andy - I would have thrown the toys out of the pram ages ago!!!!

If you are looking for some bespoke interior components and like Carbon Fibre then give http://www.reverie.ltd.uk/ a call. They do mainly Lotus parts but can accomodate independant requests. 8)

Think it's got the cuper extra's, it's got half leather, HID lights and washers, and the black wheels, dunno if it's aproper cup though as i assume there lighter and have the better suspension? Says it doesn't grip much and it's dodgy on uneven surfaces, think it's the springs and kumho tyres or w/e they are to be honest.

It's no match for the DC5 in a straight line or in the bends. :D

Yeah pink is never good, seems to happen to all cars, Corsa's are bad for it, and Honda's.

Superb write up. I would never have stuck with it with those problems. Have a soft spot for Clio's as i had an old 94 1.4 years ago and loved it although mechanically was always an ar$e.

Mint to look at and hopefully no more trips to the garage after this current one.

Just thought, the oil leak could just be a rocker cover gasket? I had it with my RS1800, that caused a couple spark plugs to swim in oil too.

Where you from mate im from maesteg , great looking car however i dont know if i would have stuck with it given the faults you have had , i use to have a 172 , came with its own swimming pool in the boot , other than that it was faultless , my mate had same prob with his , only use to happen after washing under the rear arches , strange .

Funnily enough, mate... a LOT of people share your opinion! It's real hard to explain to folks though just how much fun this car is. I know it's not the fastest (although the mod's have helped a bit and it's a bit of a sleeper, not many folks give it a second thought) but the way it handles and suits my driving... it's spot on. Especially after the damper rebuild. It's like your favourite pair of slippers / trainers that you just cannot bring yourself to part with. Which is indeed true of the Trophy. It is a keeper regardless of where future car purchases take me. :D

Hmmm, sounds a bit dodgy to me mate! The Cup is a bit lighter and doesn't have all the luxuries of the 'full fat' versions but - handling-wise - it should be up there. It won't match a DC-5 for pace though, even less so as the speeds increase. It sounds like the handling on your mate's car has well and truly been screwed up with the aftermarket setup. :(

Thanks mate - appreciate the feedback. I dropped the car off yesterday at the specialist to have the engine torn to bits and looked at so fingers crossed all will be fixed in a week or two. I'm just hoping there are no more huge bills headed my way.

Despite the 'bad press' a lot of French cars get it's surprising how many folks have had a Clio at some point and remember them fondly! I learnt to drive in a Clio. Random off-on-a-tangent comment for the day! :D

Yeah - spot on, danga. The rocker cover leak does appear to be gasket related (needs sealing properly) and sparks 2 and 3 are indeed swimming in oil. The rocker cover leak is a common issue on the ClioSport model. Hopefully the sump leak and cam seal leaks can be sorted easily. With my car being at the garage I actually noticed that there was a bigger oil leak than I thought (judging by the state of the driveway). That will be a pain to clean up.

Hi, davis.

Ah - you went with the ClioSport 172 rear Hot Tub edition! Apart from that it sounds like you had a good run with the car. They seem to be a car of extremes; either pretty much fault-free and fun or a complete pain in the ass and wallet-draining on the finances!

I'm not all that far away from you fella. I now live in Rogerstone which is just off J28 of the M4 (not far from Newport). Thanks for the reply. :D
