Reverse up hill surge / judder ...... Help! 3rd clutch by 35k!

Hi all,

I have an 07 type r with 35k miles it's an awesome car except when reversing on inclines, I bought it in March and it was diagnosed with a badly worn clutch. This was replaced by the dealer after a lot of hassle ....... The new clutch then suffered from shudder in first and in reverse, after 3 months the garage replaced the clutch again and I got them to skim the flywheel!! Fixed ........... Almost, t's now silky smooth except I'm back to where I started with the surging / juddering as the car is reversed on inclines!

Is this a characteristic of FN2's?

Has anyone else suffered with this problem? Gearbox? Clutch? Or something more obscure?

........ Basically I can't deal with the trans being pulled again, and garages aren't interested unless they are just chucking in a clutch as fast as pos.

Any ideas or experience would go a long way!

I have witnessed clutches on a Nissan Primastar van wear out one after the other, and that was due to a slightly out of align input shaft on the gearbox.

Wow the famous Loxy appears on my first post! Nothing about this thing is normal, warped front discs, 3 clutches and a linkage in the driver seat worn so the seat knocks!

That may well have been one of the factors for the second clutch as i was getting a notchy vibration through the clutch pedal, part of me wonders whether replacing the flywheel altogether would sort things out because since the skim it has been a lot better.

I'm not that savvy with the make up of the actual gearbox itself, the clutch specialist assured me the it's nothing to do with that (although he also said it didn't need a fly skim!!), the reverse judder feels similar to a clutch slip until it engages and then all is fine!

I'd try to get a drive of another FN2 just to reassure yourself either way. It certainly doesn't sound right.

I just hope it doesn't turn into one of those things that costs you a fortune to sort out.

First port of call would be back to the dealer who did the work, drive one of their cars and get the technician in the car with you to show him what it's doing.

A new clutch and flywheel was fitted in my Type R FN2 2010 just before I bought it and has now done about 8k, it has exatly the same problem, it judders reversing up an incline and very slightly in 1st while holding it on the clutch, which I have learned to live with, but the reversing juddering up a slope really annoys me. As you say Loxy its not right, phoned up the garage who fitted it and as they said they didnt fit it for me but the previous owner and they are not interested.

Juddering up an incline is not normal unless you're riding the clutch by accident.
I've had a few Hondas and they are very sensitive with even breathing on the clutch pedal when driving as it'll kangaroo or judder, sorts out bad habits anyway.

It may buck back and forth slightly if going very slow as the throttle can be sensitive but it shouldn't clutch judder.
First thought was flywheel, especially if the previous owner cooked a clutch in 35k or less but skimming should've sorted it if done properly.
Could also check biting point to see if it's catching, too low and it may not be fully disengaging, too high and it could be riding slightly.

No this is clutch judder but only when going backwards up a slope. Mine had a new clutch and flywheel. So I put ity down to it not been lined up correctly when fitted, lets hope it will bed in eventually as I dont want to have to pull the box out to rectify it. So I take it its not a common problem.
