Silver EP3 - transformation to a road legal track car

Yeah they're pretty pricey for decent tyres in a 17 inch wheel. Had a good chat with a bloke there running his EP3 on 15 inch Compomotive wheels, using a Toyo T1R tyre for only 32 quid a corner brand new, not a track tyre but still a good tyre and at a very good price. I can imagion the likes of R888's and similar are bit cheaper in 15 inch form compared to 17 inch.

The car fared well again all day, no problems again, running standard discs and pads I wasn't getting any fade, at one point when I went out on my own and got a nice quiet bit of track so done quite a long stint and didn't suffer any drop in performance from the brakes or the tyres. Went out in a mates DC2 race car, 950kgs without driver, which was a pretty quick way of getting around the track. Will put up a couple pics of the day tomorrow.

It's left me in a bit of a "what to do next" situation with the car, fast road set up, or change the tyres/wheels and tyres. Either way, the next track day won't be for a couple months yet. So in the mean time I can do a bit more stripping of the interior, and a couple other little odd jobs.

Thanks Chris, they're actually a pretty good price, and yes they're be a hell of a lot better than the current tyres :D

Will standard DC2 15's work on an EP3?

They are supposed to be very good tyres. A lot of people say they are almost as good as 888's but much cheaper.

Not sure if 15's would fit over the brakes? Have heard of a few people run 16's though.

Surprised you didn't have any brake issues to be honest. Is Anglesey hard on brakes? I am currently running OEM discs, TGM Braided lines, and DS2500's and get quite bad judder after five or so laps. I have ordered some grooved discs to hopefully help with this.

I was speaking to a guy running 15's on his EP3 today, I wasn't sure if the fact they were Compomotive wheels which as you probably know are typically used for rallying and competition, that they might give quite a high degree of clearance on the inside of the wheel for brakes. Unsure how the standard DC2 wheel's would compare, but if I could get away with using them then I would, smaller wheel, lighter weight, smaller lighter tyres, less rotational mass, that should all add up to going a touch quicker.

No brake issues at all, standard discs and pads along with standard lines and pretty fresh standard fluid, ABS disconnected. They'll always get gradual warm up's and cool down's as well just to be on the safe side (normally a full lap at a slow pace). You brake at the end of the fastest part of the coastal circuit right down into the slowest part of the circuit, it's an uphill braking zone which helps a little, but you are still throwing on the anchor's from 110mph or so down very sharp left hand bend which comes back on itself a little. One or two other braking zones but nothing too major. If you brake too much then you are going to over work your brakes and that's when problems happen, obviously. I tend to just drive to the racing line, and keep it smooth.

I'd be worried as to why you are getting judder after five or so laps, could your current discs be warped? As far as am aware the grooved discs will only really help in terms of keeping the face of the brake pad clean?

I don't think they are warped as it only happens when they are very hot. No juddering at the start of sessions or on the road. From reading up on the issue I think it is most likely the build up of uneven pad deposits.

Found this an interesting read. http://www.stoptech.com/technical-support/technical-white-papers/-warped-brake-disc-and-other-myths

They need replacing soon anyway so I will see if they help with the issue. I am also going to remove the fog lights and create an air feed towards to brakes to assist with cooling.

That's a pretty good read. The grooved discs won't do any harm, and should help in keeping the pads clean.

I like the sound of the air feeds from fog lights, its something I've looked at doing on mine, I found demon Tweeks do backing plates for behind the disc that have a place to attach a air feed hose so the air is directed directly to the centre of the disc, I assume they'd work best with vented discs (normal vented, not cross drilled). My mates Integra is running the same set up, seems to work well for him.

Here's a few pic's from the day, I'll try not to post too many because I don't want to bore anyone

Weather for the day couldn't of been more perfect if it tried...

Stuy's race Integra, this thing was stupidly quick, 220bhp, R888's, 950kgs without driver, passed pretty much everything on track, below pic was when he was about to take me out in it...

The poo tyres meant a bit of a lack of 3 wheeling :(

Anglesey - Great day, great track, I'll be going there again

Try the MLR for 7" part-worn semi slicks, that's what I did with my DC5 :D
That's a pretty good idea actually :)

Fair play to the CLS driver  I bet his tyres are very expensive.
Oh yeh they wern't cheap. Thing is though it just seemed like a bit of a waste of a day to do such a short amount of laps because you were arsing about. Maybe I'm just jealous because I only had a diesel CLS and he's got the AMG one haha.

Cheers Chris, unfortunately I think you are right. I should of tried harder to get the EP3 owner with the Compomotive 15's to part with them at the weekend
