TDi North Drag car update.

Bit of an update for those interested in our progress with Adams drag car.

We got the car finished and off the dyno with a base map at 6am on race day for the first round of the HKS series but mapped only at 8PSI stock wastegate pressure as the boost controller had died. We managed to get a 12.2 and car back fine so was happy with that as a shakedown.

This Sunday just gone was our first real tester with the car which is still a fresh build and nowhere near its full potential as we need to uprate the fuel pumps, uprate the ignition system and set it for race fuel but it would give us some more time to datalog and slowly get Adam used to the big power increase from last year with his GT35 to the much bigger GT42.

Last week we took the car down to TDi South to borrow their Rototest dyno so we could dial in some boost fully loading it up safely. we had also done a lot of work installing new injector drivers, electric water pump control and the Hondata boost controller which ran really well.

Plan was to wind it up as much as possible then back it off for the tracks conditions but it didn't quite go as planned with the time we had plus the ignition system started playing about as well as a head lifting issue so the maximum we finished with was 610bhp at the hubs running 1.38bar. This is all done using regular 99 Teso fuel. We will go full race fuel later once some head strengthening’s been carried out and ignition sorted along with a list of other jobs to do.

To say we are pleased with the results would be an understatement!
At the track I dialled in only 1 bar in 3rd and 4th and Adam did a 10.6 straight out the box.
This was then backed up with a 10.4 and we went straight into qualifying.

This is where we found the idle had gone to crap and ignition light was flickering indicating a charging problem.
As fastest qualifiers we were able to sit out the last qualifier and try and fix the fault. Unfortunately for us the alternator had packed up so the car was only running on the lightweight race battery which isn’t that good.

We did the first elimination run with the car not idling correctly so Adam had to keep revving it to stop it from stalling. If it stalled we wouldn’t be able to start it again.
He did *** 3rd gear burnout, rolled out the bath and blew a massive and I mean massive flame on *** over-run which must have been a good 6ft straight out the bonnet for several seconds making everyone....especially adam jump!

Staged, did the run and another 10.6 with a missfire at the top end.

Into the semi.

We were up against the backyard lads that had a problem so we only needed to break the beams but we decided that as long as the car was running with no check-lights due to cranking voltage so the ecu would have been in limp we would go for it. I had dialled in 1.2 bar in 3rd and 4th still under our maximum so it should have been a bit quicker if Adam could nail the start.

Again into the water box, big 3rd gear burnout and the car rolled forwards to stage but due to *** idle adam couldn’t pull up short of the stage and rolled on. The car was full of tire smoke so the lads ran over to clear the car which was where the infringement was made. Your not allowed to cross the beams or crew touch the car once it is in the staging beams. You can in pro when you see the massive burnouts and cars rolled back but not in this class unfortunately as we found out after the run.

Anyway. Adam launched it pretty well and managed an ET of 10.35 @ 142mph!
really can't believe it as we thought mid 10's would be the limit but looking at the datalogs now, knowing we can go much more boost with the turbo as well as running race fuel, we are about 25kg overweight so more to come out....its looking like we could now be in a race to be the first into the 9's!

Anyway. A video of our fastest run from yesterday and you can see clearly what happened with them touching the car and a couple of photographs.

Enjoy....We certainly are!

i love the air intake where the honda badge should be, looks like someone could get sucked up through it

Awesome figures, looking like a winner :D

Very nice, i did wonder in the right up and from the pictures about the flames & where exactly they came out from!
