Very slight knocking noise....that disappears

Hi all,

I parked up on my drive and opened the door, I thought I could hear a really really faint knocking noise.... I opened the bonnet and the engine sounded fine stood over it. I couldn't hear any knocking....went back into the car and thought I could hear a faint knock again but then it disappeared....it was definately there when I first opened the door.
Any ideas? bottom end perhaps?

(2003 EP3 131,000 motorway miles, recent oil change, well looked after etc etc...)

Cheers
James.

Had those checked (and corrected) about 8,000 miles ago. I was wondering if those additives for oil are any good - an additive to thicken it up slightly? I think Lucas do them - when I had my first car 13 years ago - a MK4 Escort 1.3cvh (3dr) I used this stuff all the time to hide that notorious tapping sound those cvh engines used to make!

I'm not sure if I want to stick it in a decent engine though! If the oil is thin then maybe it needs it? It was changed 200 miles ago. I'm using that Fuchs Super Titan 5w40 Fully synth as it was reccomended by a number of people 'into the scene'

Your oil is the correct one to use. Don't go putting any additives in it.

Griff will probably be along soon. He knows engine knocks.

Has the car been modded or remapped?

Cheers Loxy. Car has got a K&N induction filter and a DC Sports catback... that's all.
Don't think its doing it today, I can't tell!

It's not the cat back knocking under the car is it? Definitely coming from the front?

Are all your engine mounts in good nick? If one of them is going it could be making a knocking noise but you'd hear that when you are driving it.

Fingers crossed it's not your bottom end, but I'm sure you'd hear it outside of the car. I'm sure Griff has said you can get listening rods where you can put one end on different parts of the block and you'd hear if there was a knock. A decent garage would have one I'd expect.

funny you should mention engine mounts, it has suffered the common fault of the front engine mount splitting. REALLY must get that sorted.

Really hard to describe the noise, especially as I havent heard it today (and I've tried to get friends to listen to it making me seem even more of a tool as it wwasn't even present today) Won't worry about it for now BUT, how much would a rebuild cost? or is that a "how long is a piece of string" type question? (half as long as its length x2) :)
