Hi all. Today was the day I had my Spoon calipers fitted, to replace my seizing OEM ones
I went to R Motion in Usk, South Wales as I had been told good things about Mike there. He runs his own EG Civic race car and specialises in B and K series engine swaps, so really knows his stuff.
The first thing that greeted me was indeed the EG race car
In fact the car park was a sea of Hondas, some just at the beginning of being restored...
...and one in particular that was looking rather well
During my year of lusting after the callipers (I never thought I’d say that about calipers!) I read so much conflicting information about if they fit OEM wheels, how much better than OEM they are and so on, that I’ll give the facts which will hopefully be of use.
• You need spacers to fit behind OEM wheels, I’m using just 3mm and although they’re close, they’re never going to catch
• Part of the dust shield needs to be cut away. In fairness to Spoon this is shown in the instructions (even if they are pretty poor)
• Once the shield is cut, they align perfectly with the disc, with no adjustment required
• Are they better than OEM, well more in a bit.
So I had my pads, lines, callipers and spacers and was feeling pretty well organised, if a little apprehensive that all these imported parts would go together. Mike took one look at the discs and asked if I’d bought these too. Um, no.
In hindsight I should’ve checked these too, but as Honda less than six months ago said they were fine during a service and OEM discs are ace, I didn’t consider changing. So, I was stuck until Mike said he had some used grooved and drilled discs in good condition.
Ideally I’d steer clear of this more extreme style, but knowing I’d only end up driving home, ordering more stuff from Japan, I thought it best to go with it. We agreed I’d swap my knackered OEM callipers for them.
So work began and after some angle grinding, the calipers were on
Then the APP lines went on, with no problems. Mike commented they were some of the best he’d seen. That’s always reassuring.
Lastly, the Project Mu Hyper Carbons. Mike said nothing about these...
And so after bleeding the brakes
I was good to go.
All I can say is the difference is outstanding. I appreciate that just changing discs would’ve made a noticeable improvement, but this setup is amazing! As the car is a daily, I needed town driving to be easy and smooth and that’s exactly what I’ve got. The brakes are clearly improved, but in stop-start traffic on the M4 and back at home they were pretty much the same as before. Stamp on the middle pedal at higher speeds though and it stops like its hit a wall.
Seems an odd thing to say, but the brakes will definitely make my car faster now. Track day soon for sure. Anyway thanks for reading all this and for now here are some quick pictures I took on the iPhone.
