Whats good value on an ep3/overpriced?

Red only fades if it's not been looked after well. Black is highly susceptible to the front end looking like it's been splattered with tip ex as the primer is white so unless you find a pearler, it'll probably need a respray at the front end. I'd personally go for a grey, silver or red one (providing the pain is in good condition). But saying that, don't let the choice of colour come in the way of a good car, you might find a gleaming black one, which also look best when clean IMO.

black is a nightmare to keep clean but looks amazing when it is clean. I've had a satin silver type r before and it was the easiest car to keep clean, even when dirty it looks clean lol. But silver doesnt really stand out, every other car you see on the road is silver. Red looks awesome when shiny but has to be facelift as i'm not a fan of pre-facelift. Cosmic Grey just looks hardcore and mean. I'd go for either black or grey

Had a proper look without the 5K restrictor and face lift look much better for some reason. A facelift cosmic looks the fuckin tits you're right. They're going for like 6-8K though in good nick.

Be cautious as Type R's dont have timing belts, they have chains which shouldnt need replacing other than if they have stretched. So either they are dumb or something was a miss. Would be a question i would ask them..... other than that looks tidy

So they've either wrote it because it sounds good without knowledge of the car, or it's fucked lol. Would you still look at it? And is the price right do you think mate, said on the phone he'd take 5500 for it.

i'd ask him about it, and if he tries spinning you a line say actually they are chain driven. I'd still look at it as he may just not have decent knowledge of the car, check the history. i wouldnt pay any more than 5k for it, but thats the perfect world, Would possibly stretch to 5.2k. Depends what you think its worth mate. As its close i'd go and have a look, You'll know straight away what your willing to pay for it

All right cheers bud. Going to have a look tomorrow it, It has 6 months warranty too just spotted. I'm tempted though to just get the best example I can for the money, regardless of year.

This first one i mentioned might be the one if he'd let it go for about 4800 perhaps. Really mint, low mileage 2 owner.

looks good, clutch will be needing replaced in 15k-20k miles. I'd rather pay for that then those previous 2 you've posted imo

OK i'm going to see the silver one tomorrow. I heard that Honda advised to change the timing chain when changing something else at 75ish, so perhaps this explains the change.

My BIG question: If it looks OK and is sound and well, is 5500 OK for 79K facelift, or too much for the mileage, in terms of trade prices? I mean if it's over spending, by how much? Just 500 quid?

I'd still be sceptical about that timing 'belt' change. Ask what they mean, if they got confused. Also look at all the invoices, it will give an idea of service history. Feel for poor gear change, which will be clutch that's gone, and also crunching between gears.

OK cheers mate. Well it says Honda did them so i'll look for Honda receipts. If the history is comprehensive and has genuine Honda for the clutch and chain i may puchase it and cross my fingers. I'll check the advised list of issues too. Getting more and more put off this car by the second! Didn't realize the CTR was such a mine field. May end up with a Leon after all!

They really aren't any more of a minefield than any other car of comparable mileage/age. In fact they're probably less so than others marques. With regards the timing belt stuff in the advert for example, the dealer night have meant chain and not checked properly or he might have misread the history.

Sometimes the buyer will know more than the garage, they probably aren't trying to rip you off they just don't have the time or inclination to read up on every car they sell.

If you go armed with the maximum knowledge you can use it to your advantage and negotiate the price down. Sometimes bargains can be had because the dealer might not know they have a gem.

Looks like a good one, go in with an offer of £5000 saying it'll need a new clutch soon and see how they react.

The problem with buying from a dealer which isn't used to specialist cars, is that they'll have no idea about the car itself, so won't know what to look for.

Main problems are clutch and a crunchy gearbox, and a noisy steering rack. Both are expensive fixes so it's imperative that these are checked.

Why don't you try and find one from an enthusiast rather than a dealer? Chances are they'll know more about the history of the car plus you won't feel so bad as the dealer will have paid £4000 for that silver one, given it a valet and stuck it up at the price you see.

Cheers, this mileage is much better and only 25 mins down the m1. I'll try 5K Chris ok.

You are right I should probably go private and test drive lots of them and what not but i havn't the time for it. The old man knows the cars not me and he works a lot. If I could get a 69K er with a supposed FSH for around 5K i'll be happy with it, reasonable value.

I always feel there's more chance of getting ripped off going private at these sums too, even though it's probably the dealer that's more likely.

As long as you do the homework and make sure it's got no common faults, you're laughing. I have no qualms at all with spending and extra £100 or so for the right car. I just did it with the one I bought, it was the right one so I went slightly over budget. An extra couple of hundred can be the difference between a rough car and a minter. Just take your time, don't be afraid for a second viewing and don't rush into a deal you may regret 2 hours down the line. I'm sure that won't happen, but it's all too easy to get cough up in the excitement of buying a car that you start to forget common sense and any sort of logic goes out of the window. Glad to see there's two viewing it as well, second pair of eyes is a big bonus.
