I get it now. No idea on how to record the amount of knocks it is picking up and the amount that would be an issue. I'll see how the car drives.

Hello all, Hope you can help. I'll keep it short and sweet. Had my gearbox changed, they broke the knock sensor. Told me they tried to repair it and reattached it. I have been advised elsewhere that once the knock sensor is broke it can't be repaired so I need to buy a new one...

Thanks for the explanation. I first encountered it when crusing on the motorway though. Generally in a straight line I think and the noise would stop when a little acceleration is applied at a constant rate. Its in the garage for a service on Saturday so I'll get them to look at it anyway...

Hi Jizzy, The fronts do look on the low side. I've never experienced low pads making such a noise, probably because I never let them get so low! How would it explain it being an intermittent noise if its the pads?

Thanks. Is there anything about this timing chain that warrants it being done by a specialist? Or is any competent mechanic suffice? I have a mechanic I go to that does all of my work and has done several timing belt changes, but never a chain.
