Detailing perverts assemble! Rotary polishers, talk to me...

As per build thread, I'm looking at procuring myself a rotary polisher setup to correct some of the abuse my poor DC2 has endured over it's 12/13 years of existence.

Had a quick squizz about at the various pads/compounds I'd need to get hold of, but I'm stumped as to the most suitable type of polisher I'd need.

Any guides/tips/experiences greatly appreciated. I'm looking to get short of swirls, cobwebs, the odd light scratch and a hologram or two. The latter I'm not too fussed about as I think that might be a little further than I'm willing to go at this stage.

Cheers

Rotary - just get yourself a Silverline. I've had one for almost 5 years now (Orange one).

I ONLY use 3m pads, and polishes. although I use Lime Prime for a light machine polish, which does a good job on Hondas

Awesome, cheers matey. Any preferred suppliers?

Actually, I've just seen your page. How far down south do you travel?

Recently I have been earning my pennies being a self employed accountant, and thus, I can't be fcuked with cleaning cars

If you were desperate, and came up NORTH, I would be happy to do it. Otherwise, doing it yourself is cool.

I can't remember the name of the supplier I got my silverline from. :( I will try and find them out. King*** something...

Ha, yeah I can see accountancy being a better way to earn a crust than battling the elements grafting hard outdoors!

Thanks for the link, that's a bloody good price too. The ones I've been looking at range from £100-£150. I'll mail them, see when they're back in stock.

Pad wise, you use the 3M yellow/blue pads with Lime Prime Cleanser to get shot of the swirls? Being soft ass Honda paint I anything else is too abrasive?

Cheers again for that, handy link. :)

Edit - i'm speccing:

I've seen people use this with good results too, worth considering?: http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/3M_Perfect_it_III_Ultrafina_SE_1.html

Finally, do you reckon 75mm will be wide enough an area or is it worth me looking at 125mm?

Cheers!

have a look around to see if you can get the orange machine. you can get them for around £35 iirc.

The ones you're looking at are probably Makita - they're awesome, lighter, quieter. But do the same job as silverline.

Yeah I use Yellow pads with lime prime and good technique to remove 90% of EP3 swirls.

Anything more abbrasive is okay. Don't worry about it too much.

Just make sure you get;

3m screw pad - it's excellent and flexible, not too stiff. so worth the investment

3m yellow polishing pad
http://www.cartersconsumables.co.uk/3m50488-yellow-perfectit-polishing-150mm-p-1529.html

and there's your perfect start.

You could get a polishing polish (lol) to use with the yellow pad, and then a finishing polish to use with the blue (finishing) pad

3M Pads > everything else

Awesome, thanks again for that Joe. If I stick up my basket before I hit buy, would you check it over for me please? Just to be sure I've got everything right. :D

Once you've perfected it you can do my car Mike. Kthx.

:D Aww, can't I practice on yours?

I'm grabbing a couple of panels from a mate to do some other practicing on, so I'll be doing it on those before I turn to a car anyway. I've done it before, but only light passes with no correction. i.e just applying glaze Happy enough with that, and have the basics. :)

Use HIS entire car as a test car. Use a Compound. Push hard, then lol at the new colour.

I did have two spare wings until recently. They've been binned now though. Always the way.

LOL, Jack... thoughts? Delorean finish?

No beef mate, I've got a couple I want to practice dent removal on coming. Cheers anyway. :D

you can practice on the mondeo. don't GAF.

See above, could end up with hysterical results. Ratty VW look FTMFL.

Hehe, there was a dude on UK-MKIVs who attempted to stickerbomb his entire 1.6 Golf. LOLs ensued. Until someone pointed out that he'd have to notify the DVLA of a colour change... then nobody could agree what colour it would be.

milwakee and rupes also do some fantastic machines, i also use the 3m system, from the green top compound to the yellow top fine and the blue ultra fina. i have found that the blue top isnt as good as some other products now ***, ive started using poorboys black hole with the blue mop head and it realy works fantastic, the yellow top is great for getting rid of swirls when used right. theres also an american brand i use sometimes for waxing with the mop, its a company called malco (nano tec wax) the guy i bought it off also sold me a great foam head, its bigger than an eggbox foam and is like loads of foam twisted together, realy is brilliant, guys called automotive boutique

Got any links Rob?

I agree, PB BH is phenomenal stuff. Can't wait to whizz it over the Teg when I've got the paint corrected. :)
