EP3 engine tapping noise

Ouch joe, that does not sound good. Possibly just valve clearances? Sounds a little nasty for that though :/

Aye as per Dotty, I'd say that's a slapping chain. You'll have shat your tensioner or a guide.

I wouldn't drive it if you can help it.

I actually need to drive it next week pretty desperately... How long would it take a garage to fix approx.. If it is that?

What's the issue with driving it ?

Appreciate the help

If it is the tensioner, couple of hours or so labour.

Do not drive it however.

I'd suggest looking in to a hire car unless you can get it fixed in time.

If the chain isn't tight, it can jump on the cam gears very easily, then your timing is out.

It will either then run badly, not run at all or at worst case a valve will make contact with the piston (not 100 on P2V clearance to be fair).

Or even worse the chain could snap altogether.

If it is the tensioner or a guide, change the chain as well as it will be in a bad way with it slapping about.

Tegiwa have good prices on the bits.

Get it confirmed before you start shelling out on bits though.

Sweet. My trusted garage has gone busy so had to find another trusted one.

Fail.

I didn't mention.. It only does it when cold. Does that make a difference at all?

It could be the tensioner then. It works on oil pressure and it might not be working when the oil is cold and thicker.

Pure speculation though.

It's stopped making any sound. Even when stone cold.

"It's running very smooth"

#miracle ??

If it is what I'm thinking the tensioner has just started working again. If that's the case it's either on its way out or it had a blockage in its oil channels.

I'd still get it looked at.

Didn't see that one coming.

Must have been very loose, no damage to the threads in the head?
