EP3 Problems, VTEC Juddering And Bogging Down, Broken CD and Wheel Vibrations :(

I've had that before with other cars, this is almost all the time and a lot louder. Gets worse when in gear/clutch is engaged. Anoying as I can't check it whilst the car is parked up! Will update about the cat soon as it's in.

In the mean time another ideas/comments would be appreciated.

And Again thanks for all the help :)

about the vibration after 60. i had the same problem with my 4.6 hse rangerover. after a days smashing it on an off road coarse it started doing it and i jacked each wheel up and spinned them n they where buckled. you could try jacking it up and spinning the wheel unless you have already done that.

Aye mate, the wheels arent in the best condition think a previous owner has had a good few disagreements with kerbs etc so my guess would be there buckled. Usually can balance them still but may not stop the shaking! Noticed a few of them are missing wheel weights so as soon as i sort this VTEC problem out ill be getting them done just want to concentrate on getting the mechanics right first

Cheers Alex

Also did you ever get it touch with the fella you bought it off. Seems to be a lot of problems with it and their is so many type R's out there to choose from.

Yeah I did mate basically to start with he was reassuring about it and said he would help towards any costs to
Put the car right. But as it's gone on he has just given me grief or not replied. Had to threaten him
With small claims court as I have saved all his text/messages and have kept a document with pictures of everything that's happened with the car since purchase. I've been in contact with trading standards also. I know there's a lot to choose from mate and I seem to have bought just about the worst one in the UK :/

Ran another fault reader today and the results were as follows

Mil-on
Misfire-ready
Fuel-ready
Ccm-ready
Cat-ready
Hcm-n/a
Evap-n/a
2air-N/a
A/c-n/a
O2s-ready
H02s-ready
Egr-n/a

So nothing to help there unfortunately

I think you need to take the car to a specialist mate and get it looked at properly instead of guess work.

Sorry I haven't replied on here for a while guys been a bad month for money so I haven't managed to get the cat fitted yet. Also when the cat came the 3 bolts that's connect it to the centre section had been cut so I will need to mod them to get them out! :/

Cars still the same so looking forward to getting it sorted if possible, going to get it up and have a nosey about looking at the ball joints/mount bearings to sort this squeezing noise out.

Could an oil leak cause the problem, just noticed that the bottom of my engine has a coating of oil on the left hand said (gearbox is on the right) would have thought I'd get a pressure fault if it was mind. Not noticed the car using any oil at all though. Just sorting the cat out now should be on by next week

Not yet mate, haven't had time get this cat sorted out with work. Getting a decat sorted instead and just banging that in, then if no luck goin to look at valve clearances and vtec solenoid etc

Again thanks for all the input from people as I say it's down to time I haven't been able to get the car sorted :( just having to live with it as it is. Hasnt got any worse since first posting up.

As i said car will vtec fine intermittently but some times vtec doesn't come in and the car still revs to 8k then other times the car limits the revs at different points over 6k rev limiter can be at total random points.

My Vtec point is alway 6000-6200rpm when it works

It seems to be ok when the engines first running but after getting up to temp for a while it stops working and starts giving the above problems but after somemore drivingsorts it self out for a bit. Typical drive it's on n off like a light switch!

I've posted up in the wanted for a decat pipe so either there or eBay should produce some results and hopefully I'll know it that sorts it pretty soon.

Only just seen this one mate, so sorry if I repeat what others may have said!

I'm figuring on dodgey O2 sensors, not dodgey enough to be out of tolerance that the ECL comes on, but enough to cock the VVC timing up, making your VTEC / revs all over the place!
May also be something to do with the TPS sensor making the VVC timing go to pot, but without ECL, hard to diagnose!

This might sound stupid, but, may also be worth getting the car on a Dyno for a power run. I know it's the last thing you'd be thinking while it's not right, but with a power curve, you can figure out what the car should be doing at the relevant RPM, and what the power curve shows, which can give a good indication of where to look!

Not at all mate, glad of the advice. The TPS I another thing that keeps popping up when I've researched the issue I will look at prices for them if I have no luck. I have a lambda to put in with the decat so hopefully kill 2 birds with one stone there and sort it.

Right here an update finally, decat and new front lambda sensor fitted today, hasn't fixed the problem. Car is much pokeyer but still no vtec 90% of the time. Revs holding at random points above 6200rpm like a rev limiter still. Car is just stupidly loud now aswell :(

The guy at the exhaust place said the car had an oil leak that looked as though it was coming from around the pilfilter housing area. Can't say ive seen any change in the level of oil in the car. Could this affect the oil pressure but not let oil leak out hugely?

Decided to book it in with a garage as the problems is beyond my knowledge of engines now. If it turns out to be major unfortunatly I'll be putting the car up for sale as I have neither the time or the money to fix it. :(

Many thanks again for your help

Thanks again Alex

I said ages ago to take it to a garage. Sounds like timing to me still.

Yeah I agree Chris needed doing ages ago I just put it off as I had the parts recommended to change in my house so wanted that done before it went in. Sure you will agree a cheap and easy fix is always what you hope for

Getting valve timing checked when it's in garage, going to have to get this oil leak looked at aswell cause oil pressures important for vtec isn't it.

Can anyone think of anything else to get looked at while it is there? Vtec solenoid?

Cheers Again

Right chaps bit of an update

Been in the garage today and will be there tomorrow aswell

Steering problem is cause the coil overs have bit the dust so I'm after standard shocks and springs to replace them

Vtec problem so far is still there after

Spark plugs
Valve clearances
New front lambda
Decat (incase of clogged cat)

Had the oil leak checked and it is a small leak from the from crankcase seal but mechanic said it's not threatening at the moment only very small

Work left for tomorrow will be checking vtec solenoid, oil and filter change and after that I'm out of ideas :(

Got the car back Friday, been on the phone to Honda and we are leaving the vtec solenoid untill we can get a replacement o ring seal for it so avoid it leaking when it's put back on. Oil and filter have been left untill after this aswell. There's also talk of an actuator on the engine which is leaking slightly so getting that sorted aswell.

Valve clearances haven't helped but there done now so there ok for another 20k, hopefully picking up some shocks from barnesly asap and buying some lowering spring so sort the creaking out.

So I'll get them fitted asap and when the car goes back in I'll have a

-oil and filter change
-good engine flush
-vtec solenoid cleaned and new o ring and filter fitted (if Honda sells them separately)
-sort actuator

Cheers Alex

Right lads (and lasses) been to work and back in it 15 miles

EML has came on, Read the fault with my new fault code reader (Would recommend investing in one to anyone £20 off ebay and ive used it on 4 cars already works a treat!)

As is so often the case with this car theres another twist to the story

P0420 DTC Code - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

there maybe faults to come as ive covered little mileage and ditn really get the opertunity to hit VTEC properly. Off out in the car at 7 so will let you know what else comes up in the mean time

But in the mean time does this code mean the O2 sensors are shagged or more likely the CAT is clogged/dead?

Cause surely a decat would cause this fault and wouldnt make the car rubbish in VTEC

Alright mate, was just reading your thread as I'm having some issues with my ep3 and was wondering if there was a specific fault code reader needed for an ep3 because I've looked on ebay and there is a big price range...I would be very grateful if you could reccommend the model you have or show me a link to it..

Thanks in advance :)
