Hi all,
well, I first drove an ATR about 6 years ago when I managed to blag one for a few days and happened to be working in Devon for those next few days. Three days and 1000 miles later I was hooked and promised myself that I would get one one day. So, after ten years of company-cardom (latest was an 04 Accord Sport (new shape) (nice but so very boring)), I've gone and treated myself to a 2000 ATR in black (Pretty sure it's NHB). I've been looking around for a while, and found one that seems to be a minter, done 77k, and in my opinion in the best colour! I'll get some pics up soon once I can get it cleaned.
So, I picked it up last Monday and all was well. The car is perfect for me, drives like a normal nippy car around town when you want it to, but can murder most cars on the road when you keep that loud pedal down! Anyway, went to the Trafford Centre on Wednesday and decided to give it some beans on the East Lancs, got to 5,600rpm and rather than kicking me in the back it just stuttered and was very hesitant to rev any further. My first thought was to get to a garage and check the oil, so I drove the 4 miles to the nearest garage to check it. Admittedly, it seemed a little low but there was oil on the stick, it's difficult to tell how low because the oil was still obviously splattered around and not settled. But, I topped it up with 5W30 anyway to be safe. Gets back on the road, still no performance. At no point did the engine management light come on.
So, gutted, I did my Xmas shopping and went home to bed and cried myself to sleep. First thing the next day I took the car to the main stealers, who kindly checked the car out for no charge. I waited about 30 mins, then he came out and said "Yeah, there was a low oil warning that had put the car into a 'safe mode', but we've reset that and topped the oil up, it's now revving up to 8k no problem in the workshop." Bollocks, I got on the dual carriageway and it's exactly the same...I rang them back and he says "Ah, well you may have stretched the timing belt if you didn't have any oil in, and that will need an engine rebuild!"....
So, my position is now that I might be taking it into a different dealer tomorrow morning to see what they think. But, can anyone shed any light on what the problem might be exactly? The car drives perfect up to 5000rpm, and I did try again to get it to kick in and it revved pretty much all the way up to 7500rpm but there was no change in engine note or power. I'm reluctant to keep trying it though in case I damage anything.
I checked the oil this morning before starting and it was exactly on the max dot on the dipstick.
Any pointers and advice appreciated, I'm absolutely gutted that I can't use the car I've been waiting for for years.
Many thanks
Dan
