RenaultSport Clio 182 Trophy

And that just about brings things up to date with regards my 182 Trophy.

It's now been in the workshop for over a year and, due to another setback, it might be another few weeks before it's finally home. I've now been driving the Clio V6 as a daily driver since July and, despite falling in love with it, I can't wait to get the red snotbox back. It's been an absolute rollercoaster of a journey to date with so many problems, setbacks and mishaps. I really hope the finishing line is in sight now.

Great read as always Andy. Any other man would have binned the old girl so fair play to you. Also the v6 looks lovely and vey clean for a 10 year old car

Cheers, Ben. I have to admit that my patience is wearing a bit thin now! It doesn't help that the Trophy is so close to actually being finished.

As for the V6... it's a very, VERY special car and I'm tempted to see if Fred will sell it to me! LOL!

The V6 looks the business Andy, absolute cracker with the darker wheels too.

I had my 172 mapped by Paul at RS Tuning in Leeds. Nice bloke, did a top job with the map.
Not only was I getting great power delivery and a big lump more low-mid range torque, but the economy improved too!
I could steam to work and back all week long and still get over 40 mpg. Ridiculous for a 'hot hatch'
It was mapped for 99 ron though, so you paid a premium at the pumps, and ran like a dog on standard 95 ron.

Hope you get the Trophy back soon.
My 182 Cup is going in to Mick at Diamond Motors soon for the belts, service and dephaser pulley - he's a top bloke too.
Went there a couple of times last year and was very happy.

It's like i've woke up in 2006.

Clio V6 is boss.
:) 2006? Already?!

Thanks mate :)

Yep - Paul has been recommended to me many, many times so I'll be getting the car trailered up there soon. I'm not sure I'll be seeing 40mpg though! Mind you, I expect it will be better than before all the work started. I was lucky to see 22-24mpg no matter how I was driving it. The V6 has set the standard though. 6mpg when having a spirited drive... ...but boy, it was worth it!

Oh yes, Mick at Diamond kindly sourced me a brand new set of rear shocks for my Trophy. I've not had the pleasure of meeting him yet but will do soon I expect. I drive past his place (sort of) quite regularly as I often head from my home in South Wales up to see my folks and sister in Notts. I'll pop in one day as I think he might like to take a look (or a spin) in the Trophy. As you say, he's a great guy and got a good reputation. Decent Renaultsport specialists are getting less and less these days :(

Having spoken to Fred at BTM today it looks like I should be getting the Trophy back in around 5 weeks time. I hope so. As sad as it sounds I really miss the damn thing!

Like you Andy, I also had a EP3 Civic Type R and a 182 at the same time :)
Loved them both, but in different ways.

Exactly - they both have their pros and cons but I love them both, too. The EP3 is going into the workshop to have a few things done over the next few weeks. Nothing major, just new window seals, a repair to the electric window motor (passenger side), new lowering springs and a fresh FRSU. And MOT. There's no point spending big on this one as my other half has expressed an interest in selling it in a year or two as she would like either a R35 GTR (!) or, more realistically, a Focus RS MKII. We shall see. The Trophy is a keeper though!

Wow that black V6 looks gorgeous dude!!
Thanks mate. I've never driven a car with so much presence and one that draws so much attention. And it's just a poxy Clio! :p Sounds awesome though.

French cars FTW! :D

I'll read through the thread fully as I love the trophies too.

Sharky, do us all a favour, bin the Trophy and the EP3 and buy the RS and R35....you know it makes sense
LMFAO! Oh mate... it might make sense... but not necessarily financial sense! My other half and I were actually looking at the R35 as they are affordable to buy these days (secondhand I'm talking) but my GOD, sod the running costs. I followed an owners costs on one of the forums over a few months and decided that there was no way I/we could afford it and put food on the table at the same time. But I'd eat dust to have one. Well, the missus would! :p The RS is a whole lot more realistic though but we shall see how things go.

As for binning the Trophy. No disrespect but **** off! ;) Trophy 4eva ;)

And yes, it's been off the road for OVER a year now. 1 year, 12 days and 5 hours roughly. :)

   I had a feeling that was the response I'd get.

The RS is an awesome car though, the stance, the noise, the road presence, the seats, I love them. The only downside is putting miles on it and the fact the noise makes it thirsty lol.

I didn't think the R35 was much to run in all fairness but it would make sense when you boil it down to the type of car it is.

I bet you can't wait to get your own car back, I'd be very nervous driving round that V6.

You'll have a years catching up to do with the Trophy!

I had a 172 for 3 years, and we've had this 182 for 3.5 years.
The mrs says categorically, its not going any time soon.
She's got the service and belts and what not this month which will be £5 or 600. But she's not bothered, she loves the 182.
And its Racing Blue so it really looks the part.

The only thing she's said she'd consider is a Clio 200, in Racing Blue.
She's worked hard this year, moved jobs, got more qualifications and boosted her wages by 50%, so I might let her treat herself

I bet you cant wait to get the old girl back, but god I'd miss that black V6..... :(

The RS is great (although not as quick as I thought in standard form). They certainly shift well - and sound immense - but not quite as rapid as I'd anticipated. As for the thirst... well, that definitely goes with the territory. A necessary evil we'd be prepared to live with as long as the driving experience was/is worth it. :)

Oh mate - the R35 can get seriously expensive in not much time. The servicing costs (and low intervals) alone can make you weep. Even more so if things go wrong. Maybe one day (if the lottery numbers come in).

As for the V6, I'm not nervous as such. But I'm 'respectful' of it. I have it insured fully comp along with the bodywork panels as extra cover (seeing as the panels are no longer available to buy from Renault for the MkII!!!!) It's not an easy car to drive and it's very lively in poor weather, or cold weather. Short wheelbase, RWD and mid-engine aren't great for drifting with.

Believe me, I'll be doing a LOT of mileage this year. The engine will need a rebuild by the end of 2014! :)

These French hot-hatches get an awful lot of stick but it's amazing how they can get under your skin. I love the EP3, but I find the Trophy far more engaging and fun. I always get in and out with a grin.

Fair play to your missus. I think you should let her treat herself. It's only fair after what she's achieved recently... ;)

I'm counting down the days until I get mine back so I'm hoping all is smooth going from here on in. Yes, I'll miss the V6 big time. He still won't let me buy it off him *sigh*

Time for an update... dating back to December 2013...

December 2013

So... Fred sent me a few pics of some of the issues during the build.

The overall health of the engine was terrible. Very, very annoyed considering I'd previously spent thousands trying to get it running well. Allegedly it had been stripped down and inspected (by a previous 'specialist') and I was given the green light. Obviously it was not the case :(

Broken water pump with blade missing...

20131217_waterpump.jpg

Heavy breathing engine, lots of oil leaks, leaking mustard / custard from the rear... :p

20131218_poorly01.jpg

A thermostat that's seen better days...

20131218_poorly02.jpg

Blue silicone (instant gasket) floating around in the water jacket...

20131218_poorly03.jpg

Incorrect cam timing...

20131218_poorly04.jpg

At least all these issues are now fixed (along with many others) and I should get it back somewhere around the second week of January!

March 2014

I spoke to Fred again recently and the engine has been run for a short while to check all is well. However, this wasn't done for long due to the map that is currently on there. Quite frankly, it's downright poor and very likely contributed to the very poor state of my old engine. In fact, it was so bad that only the crank remains from my old engine. The block was scrap as the mapping/fuelling had caused holes to be burned into the cylinder walls. Which is a bad thing indeed. But that's all old news now as the important thing is that the engine is running and the car awaiting mapping. Paul at RS Tuning is a very busy guy (especially at the moment I would guess) so I look forward to grabbing some of his time and experience soon to get things sorted.

In the meantime, I've recently had a very enjoyable drive with Tim, Oli, Chris and Pete having been invited to join them on their Welsh Weekender driving trip. Thanks to them for the invite and great company; t'was a proper good day and it meant I was able to take the Vee out again. By the time I got home the new tyres were scrubbed in and Shell's profits had risen threefold. Worth every penny, too. Here are a few pics:

July 2014 - (Minor) Update

The car went in for an MOT today... and it passed (somehow). That's a relief :) Time to get the tax sorted... pfft.
